Just as there are d ifferent types of toys fo r each age level, so there are toys that serve d ifferen t pur poses in each age group. There are m anipulative toys, toys for physical development, balance and skill, toys fo r dram atic, im ag in a tiv e p la y , toys to teach arts and handicrafts, and toys to encourage an interest in nature, science, hob bies and pets. A child needs some of each in the form best adapted to his age level. Toys fo r babies should be selected p rim a rily from the standpoint of safety. They should have no sharp edges, no loose parts sm all enough to be swallowed. Anim als w ith eyes glued or pinned on, toys covered with poisonous paint or made of glass or china are taboo. The best choice is something that can be washed when it becomes soiled. Great Royal Feasts Once M arked Yule A modern Christm as dinner is a mere "sn ack’’ compared to the royal Yule banquets of Kings and Queens in history. F o r one of Edw ard I l l 's C hrist mas feasts 2,000 oxen were pre pared. The guests ate as much as they could and the vast leftovers were d istributed to anyone who happened to come along. Edward was the firs t English king to em ploy French cooks for a Christmas feast. When Henry I I I spent Christmas of 1241 at Gloucester, he ordered the sheriff to buy 20 large salmon to put into pies fo r the Christm as dinner. R ichard I I feasted 10,000 people at a banquet in 1399. He kept more than 1,000 cooks, each of whom specialized in one kind of food. H a n g Stockings F or Santa Cl aus Why have stockings come to be a trad ition al receptacle for C hrist mas gifts? Although historians can give no authentic answer, they point out that children's stockings are usual ly hung by the chim ney to keep w arm or d ry out, so it was natural that Santa Claus should pick them ns the place in which to deposit gifts. In certain regions o f France it is the shoe that is put out on C hrist mas Eve. Some authorities say that shoes and stockings were put near the fireplace for the same reason that an old boot was asso ciated w ith a wedding—-in order to b ring good luck and d rive away e vil spirits. Good Yule Stories B y Americans Probably the most famous A m e ri can story is Kate Douglas W iggin’s "T he B ird s’ C hristm as C arol.’ ’ Others w orth reading are Louisa M ay A lcott's "C h ristm as at O r chard House" and Vincent Star- re tt’s "Snow for C hristm as.” C hris topher M orley’s "The Worst C hrist mas Story” happens to be almost one of the best.
