One councilman put a letter in the Tidings that he was against destroying m ain st., and th at he was in favor of a truck route, I answ ered his letter. Then 1 called the mayor of the city, and had 20 m inutes talk with him. We discussed Main St. and the truck route. That was six weeks ago. lie promised to call me the next week, Tuesday, but so far, th at day hasn’t come. However, he stated, a truck route m eans a bypass, tourists would pass our city, and our business men could not operate. I recom mended to put a sign up stating, Truck route only. This candidate stated, that he was against a truck route, as you know I stand for a truck route, to keep the danger, noise smoke off Main St. To protect our school children, college s tu dents, hospital, and church w or ship. I do not believe In wlshy w ash ing, should I feel that I will be defeated, I stand for one way only, fairness and truth. I was told a truck route, was surveyed along the rallro a d tracks three years ago, yet noth ing has been done about it. Now they claim action will be taken after elections. Remember back in the '30’s when you could feed your family well for about -• .0 0 a month? If someone had said then that in 1948 you could only feed your family skimpily at $90.00 a month you would have exclaimed “R idiculous!” But your food costs are flying high. A NEW MONOPOLY FURTHER THREATENS YOUR FOOD COSTS! A smsll group—the Gillnetter’s union — want a “closed shop” on the Columbia River salmon catch. They are getting 70% of the total catch now but they want ALL! So they are aiming at your pocketbook—by trying to eliminate the fixed gear that only catch 20% of the salmon. Remember, thia 20% is the balance that can keep your salmon prices in bounds; keep your entire meat budget from ballooning out of sight. F IG H T T H IS FOOD M O N O PO LY N O W — YOU CAN PR E V E N T IT FRO M H A P P E N IN G ! The facts show—as reported by the Oregon Fish Commission, June, 1948, that all that hap pens when you ban fixed gear is that more fish are caught by gillnets. So, this bill to eliminate fixed gear is not conservation of salmon, but absolute control of the salmon catch. You housewives have had experience with such monopolies. You know what happens to your household expenses! Usually you have had to fight A FT E R these conditions exist. Now you can fight B E FO R E it is formed.
