I want to express tv^the people of Jackson County
mv sincere appreciation
for
their generous
sup
port in the Primary Election last Friday. Your vote
of confidence, expressed at the polls, will inspire
me to the greatest possible public service if I am
elected at the General Elections to the office of
County Commissioner.
To
those many
friends
who assisted in my campaign I am especially grate
ful. I want to congratulate those good citizens who
opposed me in the primaries for their clean cam
paign, conducted in the best American traditions.

NON SWIMMERS TOLD
STAY OUT OF SMALL
BOATS IN DEEP WATER
(First of six articles on basic
rules of water safety as taught
by the Y.M.C.A.)
Sum m er means swimming time
to millitons of young Am ericans
and to a good many older ones,
too.
Judging by past swimming sea
sons, the sum m er will also mean
the end of six or seven thousand
American lives - mostly young
Jives. Last year 6,500 met death
by drow ning in the seas, lakes,
ponds and w aterw ays of this n a t
ion. These were tragic deaths,
and particularly sad is the fact
that most of them need not have
happened if simple rules of w ater
safety had been learned and
practiced.
The first step tow ard water
safety is to learn to swim, and to
swim well, according to, acquatic
experts.
"Those who can’t swim well
should not only stay out of deep
water, but should also stay out of
canoes and other small craft that
are likely to capsize. Non-swim
mers and small boats form a
deadly com bination which is
doubly lethal when m ixed with
deep w ater.” say experts.
If you can't swim and - despite
reading these rules - go out in a
small boat, try to cling to it,
should it capsize. Most row boats
or canoes will rem ain afloat even
when turned over. If non-sw im
mers would hang on to them lrv-
»‘I
stead of frantically striking out
for shore, not nearly as many
would drown.
As children are victims in a
m ajority of water a c c id e n ts ,
much of the responsibility fot
preventing drownings lies with
parents. Children should not be
entrusted to t)ie mercies nf w a t
er-wings or old tit os in deep
water or unguarded swimming
pools. They can lose the water-
wings and slip off of the tires.
They should ue encouraged - but
not forced
to learn to swim,
and they should learn in well-
guarded pools under competent
adult instruction,
