We wonder what goes on these days in the weighty councils of the
Republican big and little wigs throughout the nation. Are they fig u r
ing out ways to pull rabbits out of hats in order to stop the band wag
on on which Harold Stassen is rolling, or are they beginning to see the
the lig h t and have begun planning ways of matching their contender
with the Democrat’s choice.
The Republican old guard, had up until the Nebraska results, looked
upon Stassen as a mere flash in the pan. He just wasn’t right fo r their
plans. We wonder if they’ve revised any o f their plans. From this
corner it looks as though the majority of the plans need revision.
The people need a champion, they are looking fo r a leader. I f the
Republicans are looking fo r what the people want they’ll select Stassen.
However, if the old guard Republican’s continue along their previously
appointed path, they’ll be sure to select someone who could be beaten
by a actual lop-eared donkey.
The Oregon primaries, which w ill soon be upon us, w ill serve as a
good barometer of the Minnesotian’s possibilities for getting the presi
dency, if he gets the nomination.
The Republican convention this year is going to be a real hullaballo.
Election year in America comes but once every four year and i t ’s like
an old fashioned Fourth o f July and a circus combined.
The main act this year has T a ft, Dewey, Vandenberg, M cA rthur,
Warren, and Stassen performing in the center of the ring. So far it ’s
been a great show. I f the old guard have their way, however, the main
show w ill be anti-climactical to the Republican side show.
They’ll present no opposition to the Democratic candidate. . . . un
less they change their minds and select Stassen.

The Weather
Summer came in with a lighted torch Monday. . . . and it was 10
degrees hotter in Medford, naturally, than in Ashland. One often
wonders why those people who live in Medford don’t send their wives
and families to the hill stations during the heat of the summer. Ashland
would be a very nice hill station, i t ’s a wonderful spot to spend a sum- ,
mer, cool, pleasant, refreshing breezes, cool water, and nice people. We’d
recommend it to anyone looking for a summer home-
