N o w comes a truck driver w ith an idea that the smart thing to do
would be to license pedestrians. H e might have a point there, especiallv
if the pedestrian stood a chance of losing that license whenever he got
caught jaywalking.
The truck driver after all might have a point. H e says it ’s not worth
the dough he gets paid to find himself waking up screaming night
after night, because he has been dreaming of running down pedestrians j
who have tried to play tag w ith the front bumper on his truck.
Looks as though some day the trouble brewing will come to an unde
clared war between drivers and pedestrians. We still think that if the
whole thing were put on a sporting basis the answer might be found
For example a truck driver who gets a jaywalking pedestrian in mid
street, between blocks, would, under our plan, get a bounty. And the
pedestrian who gets hit in a zoned crosswalk, would in turn collect a
bounty on the truck driver who hit him.

Every now and then some of the members o f the rural press turn out
some bits of homely wisdom that jar the teeth of some of the subscrib
ers and furnish other members o f the fraternity w ith copy.
Sage advice and bits of homely philosophy can be found in many of '
the nation’s smaller publications:

The De Pere, Wis., Journal-Democrat observed "a man’s conscience
