Red Cross
Thi, week the Red Cross drive is again in full swing in Ashland,
Talent, Phoenix and neighboring communities. 'i our neighbor is as
sisting with the drive. You can assist your neighbor by helping him
or her with the task which he has undertaken.
Assistance in this case mean, to give to the Red Cross with a smile
and without feeling as though one has just been a victim of another
sucker campaign.
This area has been spared the devastation which can follow in the
wake of a tornado, a flood, or an earthquake, 'X e have been lucky.
Tomorrow we may need assistance, however, and when we do the
Red Cross will be available to help those of us who are in need.
Merely the fact, however, that some day we, or those with whom we
are acquainted may need help, is no criteria of giving. By helping
your neighbor collect his Red Cross quota, you are helping some per
son in some part of the world. Call it charity if you wish, the world
needs more of it.
The Red Cross is a symbol of charity directed to necessary ends.
Help your neighbor make his quota and help others in the world to
live.

“Don’t Try It Again”
A letter recently appeared in the Omaha W orld-Herald which has
received national acclaim. It had been written by Chester E. Beltz, a
fireman who works for the Union Pacific Railroad. Here, in part, is
his letter, addressed to the unknown driver of a car which was almost
struck by his train:
"I don’t know’ who you are, but I do know you w’ere scared to death
when you drove your car across directly in front of a speeding passen
ger train. It was so close that I, in the cab, could see the young girl
(your sweetheart, I presume) throw her hands up in front of her face
and cringe up against you in stark horror.
" If I were that young girl I’d pull away from you, fast. You didn’t
have good sense, son. You probably say you love her. I w'onder. Those
w’e love we try to protect. But not you.
"W ouldn’t that have been a nice present to hand your mother— a
broken and battered body. And how do you think that we in the cab
of that engine would feel. We are human being too. . .
"You and your girl were one second from Eternity, son.
"I hope you read this and know it means you, and that the girl will,
too. Next time you go driving around, stop and look. We don’t want to
hit you, but we are helpless, as we cannot sw'erve away from our given
rail.
" If I were you, I’d thank God for that split second He granted you
