Heart of Asparagus
Asparagus is grown in nearly all
sections of the United States, but
large Industrial production Is lim it
ed to a few localities. In 1945, in the
nation, 126,258 acres were used for

About half of this acreage was lo
cated in California. Principal areas
of production in that state are Sac
ramento, San Joaquin, San Fernan
do and Im perial valleys.
Infra-Red Ray for Cotton.
The newest wrinkle in cotton gin
ning is the use of infra-red rays
to dry moist cotton. The Idea is to
keep a constant heat all through the
ginning process. The cotton is heat
ed while going through the extractor
and stands. A battery of 32 infra-red
lights is set up on each unit. By the
tim e the cotton passes through the
press there is little moisture left.

Third Class Pushers
Third class riders on some of tha
stage coaches in 1838 were required
to help push when the coach got into
difficulties. Second class riders
walked up hills. Only first class
riders were allowed to ride without
walking up hills or helping by push
ing.

In the summer of 1759, Jamea
Younger, a ship-owning merchant,
was in Arbigland to recruit sailors,
and he took the boy, a hardy,
well-knit and capable lad of 12, to
Whitehaven, where he shipped on a
