LOOKING BACK
A year ago our crystal ball reported that in 1 9 4 7 the stories which
,
would make headlines would concern labor, the rise of American pro-
duction, famine in Europe and Asia, war in Asia, fratricidal Battles
in India. Political revolutions in South America, the growth of air
transportation, changes in the president’s cabinet, the growth or loss
in stature of H arry Truman, the selection of a Miss America, and the
usual run of murders, suicides, wrecks, and tragedy.
The crystal ball overlooked the rise of inflation as being probably the
biggest headline of all, and the crystal ball mentioned air transport’s
growth, but didn’t get around to prophesying the fact that 1947 would
be a black banner year in the total number of air accidents.
H arry Truman grew in stature during 1947.
And the usual run of headline news had a field day with the Overell
murder case which took more time, paper, and money than any other
murder case in America’s history. The defendants, Beulah Louise O ver­
ell and her boy friend, Bud Gollum, were acquitted.
1948 HEADLINES
The headlines we wanted to write a year ago were: Club House
Completed at the Golf Course; Increased Power and Light Facilities
Available to Home Owners; City Begins Redesignation and Proper
Marking of Streets; Sewer Lines Completed in All Parts of the City;
Construction Begins on New Postoffice Building; Street Paving Ex­
tended to Include C Street and 14 Others; Parking Meters Installed;
State Highway Department Approves Truck Lane Along Railroad;
Southern Oregon College of Education Officially Designated South­
ern Oregon College; Stop Lights Placed on Main Street at Major
Intersections; No Deaths From Ashland Traffic Accidents in 1947;
Construction Begins on Four Lane Highway Between Medford and
Ashland; Tourist Traffic in Southern Oregon Hits New High; New
Industries Select Ashland Site; and SOC Raiders Selected for Second
Pear Bowl Game.
We wrote some of them. The post office and the city redesignated
some streets, and the city placed markers at all corners. Hoodlums
tore some of these down within a few days but in the main, nearly
every street in town is now marked.
Parking meters have been installed and some day there may be
money in the till to enable the city to alleviate traffic problems, such
as filling the chuck holes in some of the local roads.
Ashland Normal is now Southern Oregon College, and is growing
by leaps and bounds.
New industries have looked at Ashland and one that settled here,
is having quite a struggle because the property owners don’t want
smoge from a burner in their faces. As far as we’re concerned we’d go
for a sawmill and a burner in the center of the Plaza if it meant a
continuing payroll for this city.
And the Raiders were selected for the Second Annual Pear Bowl
game, which, by an odd chain of circumstances, was played in Med­
ford. The Raiders lost, so did Ashland.
The rest of the headlines we dreamed about a year ago, we still hope
to write. Maybe we’ll get to do that in 1948.
