THE SILENCE HAS LIFTED Ray Duncan in Everybody Magazine (Octobe r) writes “Ever since ‘The Lost Weekend,’ we alcoholism writers have been cleaning up.” Of course, th at’s a cynical view. True, millions of words have been written—books, articles, banner head lines—on problem drinking. The movies contributed recently, “Smash Up,” “Humoresque” and the short "I Am An Alcholic.” But the view of the Research Council on the Prob lems of Alcohol is that “the shroud of silence surround ing problem drinking is slowly being lifted.” In a recent bulletin the Council declares: “The tradi tional attitude of the American public—indifference, shame, ignorance, fear—toward problem drinking as it was toward mental illness, the venereal diseases, even tuberculosis and cancer, is gradually being over come. Much of the credit is due to writers.” Open Mike by Doyle SEELY * * * Dmitri Manuilisky, then secretary of the Communist International, asserted: “In the United States. . . . the communists must launch a powerful movement for soc ial insurance. They must place themselves at the head of this movement and lead it to victory.” And socializ ed medicine, of course, has top priority in the kind of “social insurance” program the communists have in mind. Some good Americans, who abhor communism and fascism, have been taken in by the clever work of the socialized medicine proponents. But, judging by the public opinion polls and other evidence, the American people as a whole seem to have no desire to entrust the standards of medical care to the politicians. ★ * * “THE DISEASE OF GOVERNMENT” The worst problem confronting the world today is what might be called, “the disease of government.” The whole history of civilization since the dawn of time has been the story of man’s struggle against op pression. Every school child is required to study the great milestones in that struggle—the signing of the Magna Carta, the writing of the Declaration of Inde- dendence, and the rest. All the revolutions ever fought have marked the attempts of peoples to free themselves from the chains of emperors, dictators, and corrupt and cruel governments. Now almost all of Europe and much of the rest of the world have turned back the clock.
