Big Russian Increase
»
VIRGIL
By Len Klei»
Russia’s rate of increase in popu
lation by births is three times that
of the United States, nearly nine
times that of England and Wales
and more than four times Scot
land's. Among 40 nations, only three
surpass Russia. They are Formosa,
with a percentage increase on 1,000
births of 24.8; Mexico with 20.5, and
Puerto Rico with 19.8. Russia's rata
is 18.6.

Oil That Lubricates
The ability of an oil to lubricate
has little relation to its viscosity, but
is rather determined by the chemi
cal structure and composition. I f the
clearance between moving parts is
close and a heavy oil is used the
friction may be great enough to heat
the oil and thereby make it thinner;
but its lubricating properties are
still just as good as before.
Pays to Operate Moderately
Equipment used at moderate
rates of operation always w ill last
longer, give less trouble and save in
energy consumption. Operate your
refrigerator more at lower settings
of the cold control. Do more cook
ing with the lower heats on burn
ers. Don’t try to hurry the washing
by overloading the machine. Turn
off light and heating appliances im
mediately
when through
using
them. F ire your furnace moderate
ly and maintain an even tempera
ture In the house. Be conscious of
moderation and. avoid the dash-and-
tear way of doing things.
F . 8. Hospital Facilities
New York leads all states In the
bed capacity of hospitals, having
221.960 beds. California places sec
ond and Illinois Is in third place.
One patient is admitted to the hos
pitals in the United States every
two seconds.
F irst axes to be ground and pol
ished before sold were manufac
tured in 1826 in Collinsville, Conn.,
by David S. Collins with his brother
and cousin. Before that time axes
were made by blacksmiths and sold
unedged.
’Gingerbread* Outmoded
Wide cornice overhangs are out of
date, and houses without them cost
lass. The same Is true of most “ gin
gerbread” which form erly was used
as architectural decoration. Simple
lines are best
Oil Put to Work
Thia country’s annual oil output
ta n do the work of 4% billion men
tolling eight hours a day, six days a
week. That is to say, It provides the
equivalent of 32 able-bodied servants
for tach person in the United States.
