Like all German institutions,
this school has been sorely ul-
fected by the war. At the school
there are 139 blind, of this num
ber 70 are over 18. The rest are
children. Over 50% of these are
under 14. The majority of the
blind have been blind since birth
but there are several here that
have been blinded by war act
ion. To my mind these are the
most pitiful. For example. Hans:
Hans is, and, before his trouble,
was a normal boy. He is well de
veloped and intelligent. He was
blinded by an exploding shell
His face is deeply pitted by shell
fragments and his right eye has
been entirely removed. His left
eye is damaged to the extent
that he will never see again.
The llrst time I saw Hans I
was momentarily sick to my sto
mach. I have never seen any
thing like It before and I hop«? I
never see it again. Upon the re
quest of the Instructor, Hans
went to the supply cuplxiard and
got out a very much used set of
maps and passed them out to the
rest of the class. As soon as each
child received his map he began
to run his hands over the raised
outlines of the map so that he
could (see) the map. Then follow
ed a short lesson In geography
that would do credit to n student
who could see in the real sense of
the word.
Hans was by fur the brightest
student In the room as he al
ways had the correct answer be
fore the others.
In another room we listened to
a little boy read for us in English
He told us that he was 10 years
old. It seemed so strange to hear
him speak English. He read at a
late that, If I had not known bet
ter, 1 would say that he could
see. He has been blind since
birth.
For the lack of proper clean
ing materials such as soap and
disenfcctents the school buildings
and the children are dity.
I cannot think of anything that
Isn't needed. All the children as

The rooms are barely warm
and since the necessary clothing
is lacking the children cannot
