CONGRATULATIONS
We’re glad to hear that Earl Newbry is the new secre­
tary of state. Whether he has aspirations for the gov-
ernship or not we don’t know; we’ve never heard him
say. But if he didn’t have any aspirations before, he
might as well prepare to be bitten by the gubernatorial
bug.
The office of the Secretary of State in the common­
wealth of Oregon is practically a paved road to the
governor’s chair.
Newbry has played his cards close to his vest in the
past. What will happen during the next few years is
problematical. Our guess is that he’ll turn up in the
race.
We’ll know for sure when we start getting press re­
leases from the office of the secretary of state on traf­
fic control. The volume of releases which are sent out
to newspapers from the office of the secretary of state
are a direct guage as to a man’s intentions.
The late Robert Farrell, Jr. had his sights set on
sitting in the governer’s chair. Never a day went by
but what a release came along from Farrell telling
about the potential number of traffic accidents which
would happen on a given day, or giving a re-capitula-
tion of the number of accidents which had taken place
during the past week. It kept his name in the papers.
Whatever happens, we’re glad that Newbry was sel­
ected, we’re sure he’ll make a good secretary of state.
And if he accepts the gauntlet, we’re sure that he’ll
make a good governor
