the United States is estimated to
exceed 50 million dollars, yet the In­
stallation of a permanent termite
control system should not be more
than 2 per cent of the cost of a
house. In sections of the South,
more than 90 per cent of houses
show termite infestation.

New Heating Idea
The radiant baseboard, consisting
of a hollow unit through which hot
water is circulated, is one of the
newest and most significant devel­
opments in the heating industry. It
takes the place of the conventional
wooden baseboard around the ex­
posed walls of a room.
Taxless Town Has Fun
The taxless town of Sweetwater,
Fla., gave a scries of parties to'
raise funds for a city hall and
youth center. All labor needed has
been pledged by craftsmen who live
In the town of 500 population. The
municipality’s only regular income
comes from building permits, occu­
pational license fees and auto In­
spections.
Believe It or Not
When an Oregon elm tree was
planted upside down, its roots de­
veloped branches growing in the
air, and its limbs burled in the
ground sent out roots. And In Cali­
fornia, a lodgepole pine 18 inches in
diameter and 40 feet high grew
through a block of granite 20 feet
square.
Electrical Farms Gain
The number of electrified farms
Is growing steadily. At the end of
last year there were 3,335,700 farms
served by rural power lines. This 1»
an Increase of 408,700 over the num­
ber of electrified farms reported the
previous year, and means that now
56.9 per cent of all farms In the
United States are served with elec­
tricity.
Flying Like a Bird
Flying equipment which can ba
etrapped to an individual has won a
patent for the Connecticut Inventor.
Application for the helicopter flying
apparatus was filed in 1943. It en­
able« the wearer to fly from 125 to
350 miles at 100 to 200 miles per
hour. Landing can be made with or
without a parachute.
Metal Used on Books
