H IN T E R ’S DREAM
The crisp fall days are upon us again and across the
hedgerows a pheasant's raucous cry echos.
In the m arshes and tules th a t border our small lakes
• and stream s the ducks are gathering, and heard over
head is the whistling flight of the southbound geese.
TYiis is the season of the birdshot hunter. From dawn
till dusk he tram ps the hills and prowls the marshes.
Before the break of dawn in the morning he crawls
quietly in the blind and there he lies waiting for the
first rays of the sun, and shooting time.
Those of the h u n ter’s clan who seek out the brant,
the white fronted geese, the Canadian honker, and the
snow goose will be crawling into straw stacks on great j
wheat farm s of the E astern slope, there to spend the i
night with the hope th at in the morning the geese will
be found feeding and resting to the windward of the
straw stack.
The horn of the hunter has sounded and in the even
ings a hunter’s moon glides through the heavens. High
overhead is heard the call of the southbound water-
fowl and down in the orchard a pheasant is raucously
calling.
