CRICKET BOOT CO.
El Paso 23, Texas
Tested in the shoes of jungle fight
ers during the war a woven plastic
screen cloth is being produced for
the civilian market. Recommended
for sports and industrial footwear,
it is said to help prevent calluses,
blisters, athlete’s foot and other af
flictions resulting from insufficient
ventilation in boots and shoes. It is
resistant to odors and can be
washed.
New Timber Created
New saw-timber is created by
tree-growth in the American forests
at the rate of 1,000 board feet every
second. Approximately two-thirds
of the area of North Carolina is
forest lands.
Forest authorities
believe that with continually im
proved management the state’s
forests can be made to grow as
much wood as Is harvested annual
ly for all purposes.
Air Express Increase
Air express observed its 20th an
niversary this year. First flights
were made in open cockpit ships and
In the first full operation, 1928, 17,000
shipments were carried. Last year
more than 3,000,000 shipments
weighing 53,750.000 pounds reached
their destination in the United States
and 60 foreign countries by air ex
press.
Value of Potatoes
Potatoes and sweet potatoes cost
the average American only 3 per
cent of his total food bill, but they
contributed 5 per cent of the calo
ries, 3 per cent of the protein, 2 per
cent of the calc’um, 7 per cent of
the iron, 6 per cent of the vitamin
A, 8 per cent of the thiamine, 4 per
cent of the riboflavin and 13 per
cent of the vitamin C.
Need to Diet
One good reason for poisoning
grasshoppers is that they will eat
their own weight in green material
in about 16 hours. If human appe
tites were on the same scale, a 150-
pound person would eat 150 pounds
of food every day.
Has Most Water
The Amazon river, 4,000 miles
long, is the world’s greatest river in
volume of water It carries. It has
1,100 tributaries.
Avocado Fat Content
The avocado is distinguished
from all other fruits, except the
olive, by its relatively high fat con
tent. It outranks apples, apricots,
bananas and peaches in thiamine,
tlboflavin and vitamin C.
Plant of Conquered
The word "cotton” is from the
Arabic word ’’kutn’’ used by an
cient Arabs to designate a plant
found in conquered lands.
Mummified Beetles
Some beetles in ancient times
were considered sacred and were
mummified.
