Chinese Lacquer Work
In olden times the Chinese ap
plied as many as 300 or more sepa
rate and distinct coats of lacquer
on surfaces to be carved, and a
lesser number on plain surfaces.
They now never use less than 3
coats and not more than 18. Great
workshops for the production of lac
quer were established in Hangchow
during the period 1130 to 1200 A.D.
Wall painting found in Korea from
the sixth century consisted chiefly
of lacquer work, or lacquer work
over painted surfaces. Between the
Han and the T'ang periods the pal
aces and temples of the Chines«
were painted both Inside and out
