Floating Fish Factory
A fishing vessel of the trawler
type, completely equipped for proc
essing fish at sea, has been pat
ented. When the net is hauled
and the fish are dumped on deck,
edible fish are pitched down chutes
to cutting tables where they are
filleted and cleaned. Fillets are
quick-frozen and packed for stor
age in the hole.
To Cook Means Bride
The word bride is believed to be
derived from an ancient Teutonic
word meaning ‘‘to cook.’’ The cere
mony used at the solemnization of
wedlock among the Romans was
called confarreatio, in token of a
lasting union between the man and
wife, with a cake of barley and
wheat.

Removing Indelible Ink
Indelible Ink on silk or nylon usu
ally can be removed by frequent
washing in warm water. Allowing
the material to dry in the bright
sunlight will help to fade the letters.
If the Ink cannot be removed In the
above manner, try one of the com
mercial bleaches; but try a sample
of the material in the bleach first to
see if it harms the material. If not,
the bleach will remove the stain.
Raw Fish Eater«
Eskimos of the Arctic regions of
America and extreme northeast of
Asia received their name from the
Algonkian Indians, living to the
south of them. The name means
"those who eat their fish raw." The
sustenance of the Eskimo is chiefly
seals and cetaceous animals which
comprise the whales, dolphins and
porpoises.

First Copper Mine
The father of all copper mines in
the U. S. was the Elizabeth mine,
near South Stafford, Vt., opened in
1793. Reopened in 1942, it now is
producing at a rate greater than at
the height of activities in the '80s.
Copper and copper-alloy objects
are found In the prehistoric re
mains of Egypt dating back to 4700
B. C. On the American continent
copper was known to, and used by,
the aboriginal races.
Eats Its Feathers
A common waterfowl, the North
American grebe, eats its own feath
ers. The grebe’s movements on
land are ungainly, but it swims
gracefully and is an expert diver,
not using wings, but propelling it
self downward solely by aid of Its
paddle-like feet. The western grebe
is from 2 to 2ft feet in length.
The Broad Arrow
In colonial days agents of the
British crown searched the New
England woods near the coast,
branding every tree over a certain
height and 24 inches diameter at
the base with His Majesty’s broad
arrow. Such trees could be har
vested only for use as masts for the
royal navy, and there was a
penalty of 100 pounds for diversion
of the tree to other uses.
New Pasteurisation Method
Pasteurization by electronics la
the latest in milk preservation. Or
dinary pasteurization holds milk at
140 degrees for 30 minutes and kills
most bacteria but not all those that
sour It. The new technique shoots
out radio waves that raise milk
to 200 degrees for a tenth of a sec
ond. kill virtually all bacteria.
Eels to Cure Rheumatism
In some areas eel skins, along
with rabbit feet, buckeyes and cop
per bracelets, are believed to be of
aid to rheumatism sufferers. So far
science and the medical profession
have not endorsed these methods of
treatment.
Make Wallboard Putty
To fill cracks in wallboard, an
economical putty can be made from
paper which is boiled to a pulp.
Add whiting to make a stiff paste
and enough glue to hold the mass
together.
