th e bus d riv er and th e o th e r on the coffee.
In th o se bus sta tio n s w here the busses a re called
th e poor p assen g ers alw ays ru sh out into th e y a rd and
a tte m p t to pile aboard th e f ir s t bus in sig h t. I t ’s a l­
w ay s th e w rong one, and is usually going in th e oppo­
site direction. Then th e re ’s a scram ble to back o ff and
g e t in to th e rig h t one.
A irlin es alleviate th is by checking th e tic k e ts a t
th e g a te s p rio r to en tra n ce onto th e field. T he buses
could do th is by checking a t th e door o r g a te of the
sta tio n and d irec tin g th e poor bew ildered p a sse n g er to
th e rig h t bus.
We c a n ’t say th a t we expect th e bus d riv e r to
h o v er over th e p assen g ers and look a fte r th e ir in d i­
vidual w elfare like th e h o stess does on an airline, bu t
we can su g g e st th a t co u rte sy and a ssista n c e such a s a j
p le a sa n t “ hello,” and a sm iling “goodby,” m ig h t m ake
th e p asse n g er feel a s th o u g h th e bus com pany w as glad
to g e t th e ir m oney.
A nd th e railro ad s, as Ja m es Young said, “A hog
can ride a cro ss th e c o u n try w ith o u t changing c ars but
you c an ’t .”

I t ’s too bad th a t ra ilro a d s c an ’t tu rn ou t good p e r­
sonal service. A bout all you g e t in th e w ay of personal
service w hen you ride an y tr a in is a sn eer from th e con-
d u s to r w hen he ta k e s y o u r tic k e t and a b ru sh -o ff from
th e p o rte r w hen you leave th e train .
A nd buying a tic k e t to tra v e l by rail is an expe­
rien ce in itself. In th e m a jo rity of sm all sta tio n s in th e
lan d you w alk up to a little w alled window, such as th e
p riso n e r of X enda m u st have looked th ro u g h , and if
y o u ’re lucky th e m an on th e o th e r side of th e window
will say , “W h a tc h e r w a n t? ”
I f y o u ’re n o t so lucky, h e ’ll ignore you until finally
a f t e r an h o u r of p a tie n t w a itin g h e’ll b reak down and
w alk o v er and s ta n d in fro n t of you, sq u in tin g a t you
u n d e r t h a t green eyeshade, as though you w ere som e­
th in g th a t sh o u ld n ’t have been tu rn e d loose.
