COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY The suggestion w'hich has been advanced that the people of the city of Ashland help pay the cost of pub- ________ _ licising _ and _ promoting the community by contributing niiTl tax levy to the"support of the Chamber of a 2 merce is a good suggestion. We feel that the Chamber of Commerce can be and should be more than merely a m erchant's clearing house. C reek, S unday, Ju ly l.i. T he cem STOP! The change in the law concerning the everpresent b at tle of the pedestrian and the m otorist at the cross walks is very clear. The present law, which became effective July 5 states th a t the vehicle will STOP for a pedestrian w ith in the crosswalk area which the vehicle is approaching. The form er law’, though set up to do the same thing, was not specific. It merely stated th a t the pedestrian had the right-of-way over the vehicle approaching in his lane. There seems to us th a t the new law is specific enough to have teeth in it. However, we presume some hapless pedestrian will have to be bounced all over the pavement by a 10 ton truck or a 10 beer hot-rod hop head in order to create a test case so th a t wre can find out if the law is really enforceable. if T A L E N T NEW S Karl Baylor Dies In Talent, July 10 FARM SAFETY The week of July 20 to 26 has been set aside by v ar ious insurance and farm groups as National Farm Safety week. Though there is a preponderance of v ar ious types of weeks, some 351 to be exact, honoring or advertising some type of product or type of business, we feel th a t it is of more than passing interest to call attention to the fact th a t on the farm s of the nation an amazingly high number of accidents occur. In 1946 more than 4500 people were killed in farm accidents. Injuries on the nations farm s totaled 300,000. Those are high totals. They can be included among industrial accident figures for farm ing is an industry. It also happens to be a dangerous industry. It would be well if you would look around your farm and see for yourself just what potential accidents a r e ' lying about, waiting to happen. You’d probably be surprised at the potential num ber. The m ajority of them can be traced to careless ness, some of this is carelessness in proper replace ment and repair of equipment, some of this is careless ness in handling equipment and animals, and all of this carelessness can be traced right to one individual. The owner and operator of the farm. L ast year 4500 farm ers and farm workers through accidents died. How many will die this year is up to you farm ers. * ★ * BEER JOINTS We’ve always stated th a t if we owned a beer joint in this town we’d w ant it to have the flashiest front and the nicest plush lined interior of any business in the city. Seems to us th a t one of the most im portant things in running a beer jo in t in order to appeal to the beer trad e is a nice front, a clean interior, and a plea sant decor.
