VIRGIL

Locker Space
Because freezer-locker space is
limited, it is necessary to plan for
the most economical and satisfying
use of the equipment. The kinds of
fruit, vegetables and meat to be
frozen and quantity of each to sup
ply family’s needs should be esti
mated early in the season to pre
vent early products crowding out
later important crops.
New Furniture
New furniture that has never been
finished and pieces that have been
cleaned with lye or soda require
a wood filler before applying the
new finish. If the furniture is to be
stained, apply the stain to the wood
first, then the filler. Shellac may be
used as a filler for walnut, poplar,
pine and maple.
By Jeff Hayes
Need Sunlight
Vegetables grow best where they
get at least five or six hours of full
sunlight during the middle of the
day.
Baseball Attendance
Smallest paid attendance in Na
tional league was when Chicago and
Troy played, September 27, 1831.
Twelve saw the same.
A
Women In Japan
There are upward of 700 Ameri
can women in Japan and 1,300 more
are expected eventually.
Soil 'Blotters*
Soils will be better ''blotters” for
rainfall if good soil management
methods and proper rotations are
followed. Among good management
practices are the growing of deep-
rooted legumes in the rotation, the
use of lime as determined by tests,
application of plant food and the
return of manure and crop residues
to the soil.
Historical Precedent
The Lambeth Walk, which be
came a popular dance 10 years ago,
had an historical precedent in the
Lambeth walks which existed in
England as far back as the seven
teenth century when tiles made in
Lambeth were used as street pav
ings.
Garden Cultivation
Cultivate home gardens often
enough to keep them free of weeds
and grass. If rain causes excessive
grass and weeds, clean the garden
and truck patches first as the fam
ily food supply and health are at
stake, the Extension Service says
Ascorbic Acid
Fruits and vegetables are the prin
cipal sources of ascorbic acid. This
vitamin keeps gums healthy, in
creases resistance to infection and
helps In development of teeth and
bones.
