labor, and, in tu rn , fo r th e p ro d u cts of th e ir lab o r th an

th e w heels g c round, and w h a t keeps th e b utcher, th e
baker, th e candlestick m ak e r and all th e ir c o m p atrio ts
h ap p y and contented.

m o n th s by o u r natio n al political lead ers is noth in g
m ore th a n a lot of em pty noise. It has done n o th in g
tow ard a v e rtin g a recession and if th e re have been
an y re su lts it h as been to frig h te n a lot of “scare-eas-
ily s” in to b a c k tra c k in g and re tre n c h in g and as a re
su lt th e re h a s been a slackening o ff in m any lines of
business.
A s long a s labor receives high w ages, and capital
receives good p ro fits, and sto ck h o ld ers can clip cou
pons th is c o u n try will have p ro sp e rity . I t m ay be an
expensive so rt of p ro sp e rity b u t th u s f a r in th e h isto ry
of th e world all p ro sp e rity periods have been expen
sive, and all depressions have been m ig h ty poor.
T h ere is no stopping on th is continually ro ta tin g
p lan et. The A m erican people have been co ntinually
ra isin g th e ir social s ta n d a rd s ; no fu tu re econom ic de
p ressio n can drop th e index of living to as low a point
a s it stood in 1932. T h a t poin t h a s been passed. F u tu re
econom ic lows will drop below th e p re se n t level b u t I
none will sink to th e level of an y previous low. T his is*
caused by th e strid e s w hich th e econom ic sta n d a rd of
living ta k e s betw een depressions. T he s ta n d a rd of liv
in g goes up each y e a r to a point above th a t of th e pre
vious year. T h is m eans th a t th e s ta n d a rd of living is
co n tin ually g e ttin g so m uch b e tte r t h a t it can n o t drop
below a c e rta in point, and th a t c e rta in point from de
p ressio n to depression is contin u ally g e ttin g higher.
T he longer we sta y in th is p re se n t period th e h ig h
e r will be o u r sta n d a rd when and if th e m uch p ro p h
esied depression strik es. W hen prices go down and
w ages drop o ff and lab o rers go on relief, th en w e’ll
w ish fo r high prices and unlim ited dem and fo r goods.
