Rural Roads
A report on multi-laned highways
In 1943 showed that only 6 per cent
of our primary rural highways had
more than two lanes, and of the
20,879 miles in this class, 14,661
were 3-laned, a type condemned as
dangerous by safety engineers.
Hardy Ramblers
As the name indicates, hardy
rambler roses are resistant to
frost injury. They bloom one time
during the summer and because the
canes grow to extreme lengths,
they are good for trellis and wall
decoration.
Indian Superstition
American Indians believed that if
a father, near the time of the birth
of his child, was careless in his
meat diet, the child would suffer
and inherit the physical faults and
peculiarities of the animals eaten.
Congress Grows
The house of representatives has
grown from 65 to 435 members
since 1789, according to the Ency
clopaedia Britannica. The senate,
too, has grown from 26 to 96 mem
bers.

Polyantha Roses
Also known as baby ramblers,
the polyanthas resulted from the
crossing of hybrid teas, teas and a
dwarf variety of a hardy multiflora
climber. The flowers are in clusters
and are ever-blooming. They are of
about the same hardiness as the
hybrid perpetuals and are useful
where low - growing, continuous
blooming plants are desired.
Wide Roads
Motorists who think of American
highways as typified by the Penn
sylvania Turnpike or Davison High
way will be surprised to learn we
hive in the United States only 5,191
miles of 4-lane type. 736 miles of
5- lane type and some 300 miles of
6- lane. These 4-lane and upward
roadways are only .015 per cent of
the total rural mileage.
Hybrid Perpetual Roses
Frost hardy and vigorous tn
growth hybrid perpetual roses can
be grown in most sections of the
United States if given winter pro
tection where the climate Is more
severe. They bloom but one time
during the summer and the flowers
are borne on shoots from the cur
rent season's wood.
Merrie England
Bull and bear baiting continued
from the 12th century through the
days of Shakespeare in an arena
near the Globe theater, across the
Thames from London. In the 12th
century, too, horse racing took
place in Smithfield, just northwest
of the London wall, where a horse
market was held.
Railway Unions
Around 80 or 85 per cent of all
railway workers are members of
labor organizations. There are more
than 20 unions or brotherhoods in
the railway Industry. Members of
these unions negotiate with the rail
roads through chosen representa
tives. Through many years of nego
tiations, the train aervica brother
hoods and railway management
have developed an extensive, and,
to the layman, a rather complicated
system of rules and regulations gov
erning wage schedules and working
conditions.
Rheumatic Fever
Next to painful Joints, the most
characteristic symptom of rheu
matic fever Is chorea, or, as it is
more generally called, St. Vitus’
dance. Approximately one half of
the children with rheumatic fever
have had chorea at some time or
other. It begins as an unusual form
of nervousness or awkwardness and
Is often first noticed at school. It
usually becomes more pronounced
later as purposeless jerking move
ments of the arms, the legs, and
the face. It may even temporarily
affect the speech.
