Some individual manufacturers had already dropped prices and others have followed. The most notable of i these have been Ford, Plymouth, Macy’s department I store, and International Harvester. However, dropping prices some few dollars on .82000 items is seemingly m e of a good will gesture which comes under the heading of public relations than it is a definite trend toward overall price reductions. Priced Out of the Market Last week throughout the nation there was a rising surge of non-buying on the part of the consumers. Sales on all items, throughout the nation as a whole fell off sharply. Mr. and Mrs. Consumer had possibly had enough. The period of prosperity, brought about by spending savings and high wages was coming to a close. The war savings were gone and the high wages were being eaten up each week by the high cost of food stuffs. A nationwide resistance on the part, of the consumers to buy was reflecting itself in the econ omic structure. Possibilities are. many economists and many hard- headed business men think, that the United States is heading toward a repetition of the bust of the earlv -fl s; the causes are the seme, unprecedented war pros perity, spiraling prices, spiraling wages, strikes, and lowered production. The present jittery feeling which many retailers have toward getting caught with thousands of dol lars worth of high priced, low quality merchandise on their shelves, the fact that profits in big industry are e.« oroitantly high ,the lact that people are beginning to be interested in shopping and saving, all create a tinder dry situation which could be fanned into a panic by one slight spark. A hen and what that spark might be is problematical but until the threat of inflation is over, until produc tion meets consumer demands at normal prices, and until industry shares its profits with labor in a satis factory fashion to both labor and industry the threat oi depressions, busts, and recessions will be ever pres ent, and the threat will periodically be a fulfilled real ity. * ' "On the Plaza" 1 ★ ★ ★ ‘ The way to stop inflation is to stop the forces that produce inflation, whether these be increased wage rates, shorter hours of work or reductions in produc tivity per man hour.’’ Paul II. Nystrom, professor oi Marketing, Columbia university. Controls on labor, on management, on'pricer,, would not be necessary if labor, management, and commodity prices were of such a nature tha> they could and would control themselves. This seemingly is impossible. Now that industry and business is so complex, large, and integrated, it may be necessary to add controls to keep the industrial boat on an even keel. “Wise Man Avoids Getting* Caught With Machinery Down” C ly d e N .
