been ta lk in g telephones because of
the w e ll-p u b licized A lexander G ra ­
ham B e ll centenary. R eading the
pounds of p u b lic ity , I learned m ore
about A lexander G raham B e ll than
I e ver knew before. I had read o f
how he dream ed o f m a kin g the tele­
graph in s tru m e n t “ ta lk " and how
and w hy his d re a m came tru e . I
d id n 't know about his fa th e r’ s deep
study o f phonetics and his own in ­
terest in “ m a k in g speech v is ib le ,”
in teaching the deaf to ta lk , o r th a t
he was an accom plished m u sicia n o r
m any o ther facets of th is re m a rk ­
able m a n 's re m a rk a b le h isto ry.
I a lre a d y knew a little about the
telephone business fro m firs t hand
observance.
I t was ju s t about 20 years before
I e ver used a telephone th a t B ell,
thanks to his h a rm o n ic a lly tra in e d
ear, found on th a t day in 1875 th a t
w h a t he thought could be done, had
been achieved in his own la b o ra to ry
on C ourt street, Boston. F ro m then
on it was ju s t a question o f re ­
m o vin g "th e bugs.” The next y e a r
he was d e m o n stra tin g his in s tru ­
m e n t before audiences w ith co n ve r­
sations over several m iles o f w ire .

phone ca ll fro m m y frie n d Capt. E.
John Long, USNR, who is assistant

enough, when I jo in e d him a t the
clu b he was w e a rin g th a t “ E u re ka -

end of our vanished pajam a cord.
W hat happened to Long was com ­
parable. He had recorded the con­
firm a tio n by his chief, Capt. H. A.
B a ld rid g e , c h ie f c u ra to r, o f the long-
suspected but never-proved date of
b irth o f John P a u l Jones, fa th e r of
the navy. And i t was fo rtu n a te he
had, fo r the post office d e p a rtm e n t
was dem anding i t fo r the next
m e m o ria l stam p.
B a ld rid g e a lre a d y had a le tte r of
Jones’ containing th is sentence:
"A m e ric a has been the co u n try of
m y fond election fro m the age o f
13.” Since it was known he sailed
fro m W hitehaven, E ngland, in 1760
th a t w ould m ake the b irth date
(1760 m inus 13) 1747.
B u t the b irth date was not a ctu a lly
recorded in any auth e n tic w ritin g ,
not even the e a rly Jones b io g ra p h y
by C harles Sands. H ow ever, there
cam e in to te m p o ra ry possession of
C aptain B a ld rid g e a copy o f th a t
w o rk, upon whose m a rg in s Janette
T a y lo r had w ritte n some caustic
com m ent. M iss T a y lo r was a niece
o f Jones who had been a close and
m e ticu lo u s student o f h e r uncle’ s life
and m a n y o f his papers w hich she
possessed.
