R eading the pounds of p u b lic ity , I learned m ore about A lexander G raham B e ll than I e ver knew before. I had read o f how he dream ed o f m a kin g the tele­ graph in s tru m e n t “ ta lk " and how and w hy his d re a m came tru e . I d id n 't know about his fa th e r’ s deep study o f phonetics and his own in ­ terest in “ m a k in g speech v is ib le ,” in teaching the deaf to ta lk , o r th a t he was an accom plished m u sicia n o r m any o ther facets of th is re m a rk ­ able m a n 's re m a rk a b le h isto ry. I a lre a d y knew a little about the telephone business fro m firs t hand observance. I t was ju s t about 20 years before I e ver used a telephone th a t B ell, thanks to his h a rm o n ic a lly tra in e d ear, found on th a t day in 1875 th a t w h a t he thought could be done, had been achieved in his own la b o ra to ry on C ourt street, Boston. F ro m then on it was ju s t a question o f re ­ m o vin g "th e bugs.” The next y e a r he was d e m o n stra tin g his in s tru ­ m e n t before audiences w ith co n ve r­ sations over several m iles o f w ire . Before he died at the age o f 75. people w ere ta lk in g over an under­ w a te r cable fro m U nited States to Cuba.
