As every schoolboy knows. Paul Bunyan was the discoverer of
logging, and his blue ox, Babe, measured 42 axe handle* and a
plug ot chewing tobacco lieiween the horns.
Paul had a wav of (hanging the scenery wherever he went
adding a inouniaiit here, carving out a bay there, etc. But when
he came to (begun, he couldn’t see a thing to change, it was ao
perfect.

Oh. he did a few little things, of course. Built a whale corral on
ihe coast (it's called Coo» Bay now I. And Babe, the bine ox, got
ihe blind stagger» one night and laid out the course of the Snake
River. But by and large Oregon’s landscape is pretty much as the
gieat logger found it. and trees are still the higge-t crop. How
ever. don't g el the idea that all you’ll see in Oregon is tree».
There are huge mountain* shaped like ice cieain cone*. There
are big. stalely rivers- the Columbia and VI illamette—and dozen»
of smaller ones. I Two of these, the Bogue and McKenzie, ate
world-famous fishing streams.) There are many lakes, including
Cialer L ake—so big and blue you won’t believe it. There are
mile» of wide, clean beaches edged with driftv- I. M' lig the
Columbia River Highway are all the waterfalls you’d ever want
to see. Vnd if you like dams, there’s Bonneville, near Portland.
Southern Pacific is the principal railroad in Oregon. Our Shasta
Route runs from Portland south thiough Salem Io Eugene, where
it divides— the Cascade line going to California through Klamath
Falls; the Siskiyou line through Roseburg, Grants Pa»», Medford
and Ashland. (Klamath Fall*. Grants Pa«s and Medford are the
gateways Io Crater Lake National Park.)

You hear a lot about capital and
labor nowadays, as if the two eon Id

Bert C hilders—who has 320 acres
of producing land, a fair-sized herd
of rattle, and two farm hands work
ing for him.
If you culled B ert n “eapitnli. I"
he wouldn’t know w h at you

If anybody has a beef—w hether
it’s about wages or hours or equip

I don’t say all labor problems
are as simple as B e rt’s. B ut from
