And yet, today, th® world acknowledges the brilliant com
petence of the U. S. Army’s performance in bringing a new
way of life to a conquered nation.
Miss Helen Mears, writing in a recent issue of The New
Yorker, put it this way: “Considering that it is only a little
more than a year since the first American troops landed in
Japan . . . conditions today are astonishing. . . . The occupation
has become . . . so efficient that life in Japan is no more
difficult or dangerous than life at home. . . . From the GI
right on up the line, the word . . . is 'good duty.’ ”
Similarly favorable reports continue to appear almost
daily, as on-the-scene correspondents observe b u lly 's moot
successful handling of a defeated people.
