Army’s performance in bringing a new way of life to a conquered nation. Miss Helen Mears, writing in a recent issue of The New Yorker, put it this way: “Considering that it is only a little more than a year since the first American troops landed in Japan . . . conditions today are astonishing. . . . The occupation has become . . . so efficient that life in Japan is no more difficult or dangerous than life at home. . . . From the GI right on up the line, the word . . . is 'good duty.’ ” Similarly favorable reports continue to appear almost daily, as on-the-scene correspondents observe b u lly 's moot successful handling of a defeated people.
