Radio telephone is already a fact between Los Angeles
and Catalina Island, and soon, it may be used other
places in the West to seive remote areas. Transmitters
like this one beam micro-waves containing the voice
impulses, and the cost of constructing a long telephone
line can be eliminated.

T here has been m uch talk d uring th e p a st few m on
th s about a com m unity center, th e need for one, the
fact th a t the children need one. the fact th a t th e s tu
dents need one, th e fac t th e business men need one
to help curb th e ir falling w aistlines, th e fact th a t the
older folks need one as a place to m eet.
The fac ts a re : th a t A shland is very well equipped
w ith com m unity c en ters; fa r b e tte r th an m ost cities of
its size. The W om ans civic club, the A rm ory, th e J u n
ior high gym nasium , th e college gym nasium , the A m er
ican Legion hall, th e Masonic hall, th e IOOF hall. SOC
auditorium , are all com m unity centers, as a re th e re
creation and m eeting room s of th e various churches.
A com m unity cen ter type recreational program is be
ing offered each M onday night at SOC gym nasium . A
YMCA basketball league is reaching th e children of
several churches. A city bowling league o ffers oppor
tu n ity for recreation and exercise to businessm en.
S k atin g a t the arm o ry helps keep th e c h il’ren off the
stre ets. And physical education in stru ctio n is available
to tw o d ifferen t groups of boys. The Camp fire girls
have ju s t been given a cam p site, which can be th e ir
com m unity center, and the YMCA is ta k in g over the
Pioneer hall as th e ir com m unity center.
Seems to us th a t th e th in g which is needed is a

Power-lina carrier is a new device that enables your
voice to "hitch-hike" along existing power lines. One of
the first eight systems constructed in the United States
is now in operation in Washington and others are
planned. Power-line telephones are as safe as any anti
can be used to call any other station in the country.
High-strength steel wire that cuts the number of poles
required almost in halt is also being used to speed tele
phone expansion in rural areas. For it is our purpose in
an expansion program that will aggregate $330,000,000
for 1946 anti 1947 alone to bring telephone service to
everyone who wants it just as rapidlv as possible and to
improve service in every w ay we can.
An ever-improving telephone service at the least
cost consistent u ith good uages and u orbing conditions
for out employees and a >easonahli return to the thou
sands of fteofile u ho bat e hit esled in the business.
