U ta h Ancients Cherikhed Amber In Roman times, according to Pliny, a small statuette of a man carved in amber often cost as much as a healthy slave. It was shaped into cameos, statuettes, cups, rings and a variety of other ornaments for which it is now but little used. It was valued as a medi cine to cure many ills and, like most gems, as a charm against dis ease and ill fortune. Amber Talisman From and during prehistoric times wearing amber was con sidered a potent charm against dis ease and many kinds of ill fortune. According to some authorities this belief in the potency of amber as a charm is a survival from the time of widespread sun worship when the yellow color and general aspect of amber suggested that it might par take of the divine nature of the sun. Washing Rubbers Galoshes and rubbers w ill stand Innumerable washhings In soap-sud sy water. Put them in a large pan or tub of soapy water, let them stand about three minutes, turn them inside out, and brush the lin ing with a soft brush. A fter they have been cleaned thoroughly, rinse them in two warm waters, and hang them up to dry. Scissors and shears are easily damaged. I f you use them for cut ting paper, cardboard, flowers, wet cloth or heavy string, the fine cut ting edge w ill become dulled. I f the blades are sprung from cutting heavy fabric, they are damaged permanently. Keep a pair of in expensive shears for this heavy cut ting. Drying Off Cow The best way to “ dry off" a cow that persists in producing m ilk right up to calving time is to cut off all feed except hay, and m ilk the cow only when the udder is dis tended. As soon as the cow is safely dry, she should go back on fu ll ra tion!. Human Nutrition Human nutrition differs from that of animals in two important re spects: first, we are not raising humans for more body weight and greater reproduction, as in the case w ith domestic animals, and second ly only a small part of human food consumed is in its original form as raised by the farm er. Heating Coils When food is spilled on the heat- ing unit of an electric stove it should be allowed to char and then brushed off. Washing the coils may cause a short circuit. Saving Flower Seeds If you are saving flower seeds from one season to the n e x t_ dry them thoroughly and place in pock ets in the attic. Soaking Clothes Soak clothes in cool or luke warm water rather than cold water, for cold water may cause the fabric mesh to close and hold the d ir t Flying Money The oldest known bank notes are those known as "the flying money,” issued in China in 2697 B. C. Food Buying Careful buying of foods to suit the fam ily needs is an important means of preventing waste. The larger the fam ily Icebox, the larger the quan tities of food that can be purchased without danger of spoilage. For the fam ily that likes to make large purchases, a system of canning part of the wholesale purchases of fresh foods has proved practical. Use More Fertilizer In the western part of the north central area, farmers are using three times as much fertilizer as in 1941. - Frying Eggs I f you like a fried egg with yolk well done, cover the pan in which the egg fries. • D airy Cows Need Rest D airy cows need a six weeks’ va cation from the seven-day-a-week job of producing m ilk to get enough rest and energy to carry on with top m ilk production through the rest of a year following calving. The m ain reason for giving each cow a rest from m ilk production before calving is to enable her to build up body reserves of fats and tissues, so that she can stand the long strain of m ilk production even when she cannot quite eat enough to make up fo r all the m ilk she produces. Good cows, especially, need thia va- r a fin n
