Stone Fleet
Aiming to close the channels of
southern harbors to blockade-run
ners during the Civil war, the navy
department purchased small sailing
vessels loaded with stone and
sank them at southern harbor en
trances. On November 18, 1861,
three were sunk at Ochracoke In
let, N. C. ; 16 were sunk in the main
entrance to Charleston harbor on
December 20, 1861, and 20 were
sunk in another entrance to Charles
ton harbor, called Maffit’s channel,
on January 26, 1862. Nothing was
accomplished by this strategy, how
ever, as marine worms ate the
ships’ timbers and the stones sank
in the mud.
Electric Whip for Lions
Electrical novelties were common
as far back as the 1880s. A German
lion trainer of that age kept his ani-
l mals in line with an electric whip.
Of twisted wire with a switch in
the handle, it was connected to a
charged metallic plate in the cage
floor. A
Hanging Furs
Use a sturdy hanger for furs to
mold the shoulders. The most queen
ly furs can be reduced to dowdy
appearance by tossing them care
lessly over chair backs. And don’t
crowd furs into a warm, crowded
closet, since they’ll dry out, crust
and mat.
Gathering Eggs
Eggs should be gathered at least
two or three times a day during
hot weather in wire baskets to in
sure rapid cooling. Eggs in wire
baskets will cool within five hours,
while those in galvanized pails
require nine hours.
Soak Tans
When pans are soaked, they are
usually easy to wash, but when food
is permitted to dry and harden
on them, washing is a problem.
Make it part of your routine to fill
pots and pans with clear water im
mediately after using.
Bigger Farm s
While there were about 200,000
fewer farm s in 1945 than in 1940,
land In farms was about 88,000,000
acres greater in 1945, and harvest
ed cropland was about 22 million
acres greater in 1945.
Railroad Worm
Railroad worm is the principal
pest that blocks the efforts of homo
orchardists to raise good apples.
All near-by neglected or wild rn-
ple trees, and all windfall apples
should be destroyed.
