P ra c tic a lly speaking, there is enough m a te ria l in alm ost any good eoat fo r at least a s k irt, and ve ry often a short ja cke t. I t ’ s not even tedious w ork to do th is rem odeling if you w ill space out the w ork c a re ­ fu lly , instead o f try in g to do the whole tilin g at once. The tim e spent on sewing depends upon yo u r own in d iv id u a l s k ill. I t can be com pleted in an afternoon, but w h a t’ s the rush? Take it slow ly, because yo u r re w a rd w ill be brand new o u tfit that no one would recognize as a made-over. Choose Style to F it M aterial on Hand N a tu ra lly when you are re m o d e l­ ing you w ill be som ew hat—but not too m uch lim ite d —in w h a t you can do w ith the m a te ria l you have. I f the coat has no seams in the back the job is an easy one because th is can be used fo r the back o f the s k irt. I f the coat is gored o r pleated, select a p a tte rn you can adapt a cco rd in g ly. Because o f the coat opening in fro n t you w ill w ant a s k irt th a t has several sections in fro n t—a t least two. You can of course have a center pleat o r center seam if you wish. A navy wool suit with weskit- cut points for the jacket brings to the fore the new mode in suits. A white crepe gilet completes the ensemble. ever, should you discover spots o r streaks of fa d in g in the coat, tu rn the fa b ric to the wrong side and use that. F a d in g won’t occur, o f course, on the d a rk e r fa b rics o r tweeds, but blue and green pastel coats m a y show some traces of fading. You’ ll find th a t the weave on the w rong side, though not as smooth as on the side a lre a d y used, is p e rfe c tly usable and serviceable. I t you are using an old coat fo r a ja c k e t and find th a t the edges and buttonholes are w orn, tr y a co n tra st­ ing co lo r fo r p ip in g the opening and m ake buttonholes in that. A ve ry good idea fo r th is w ould be to use some fa b ric fro m the same m a te ria l as the s k irt as th is w ould tie the o u tfit together.
