The Newspaper As A Public Servant A Free press is the one thing that distinguished America from the majority of the rest of the nations of the world. A Free press is in ail cases the voice of freedom, the guardian of liberty. W ith o u t a free press there could not be a free people. We Americans are a free people, and our newspapers are the most outspoken for the right of free speech of any newspapers in the world. It is justly fitting that the newspapers of America designate O ct ober 1 to 8 as National Newspaper week. It also follows that in ad dition to tooting their own horns the newspapers of America should stop and take stock of the situation that exists in regard to their cov erage of the news and whether or not they are actually serving the communities in which they are published or whether they are merely being published by a corporation or an individual in the interests of greater return on that corporation or individuals investment. We don’t believe that there are too many newspapers in America which are following the line of least resistance. T h e majority of exchange copies which cross our desk are good newspapers, all of them busy grinding axes for the good of the com munities which they serve. It is this continual grinding of the various axes of the various groups within a community that keeps a town razor sharp. And a good news paper reflects these differences and helps point the proper way. When ( a newspaper fails to take part in community affairs, when the tim e! comes that the newspaper feels that it’s best interest lie in keeping I out of the communities various fights and squabbles, then that news No doubt the average small paper is failing in its dutv to its readers and the newspaper tradition. boy is not unduly alarm ed over I the soap shortage. Mebbe, things are not so bad as they seem. The Harvest Festival which is being presented in Ashland October 3, 4, and j , is an opportunity for Ashland residents and the members of the farming communities of Valleyviey, Bellview and Talent to get logether and enjoy a good old fashioned Harvest gathering. Since time immemorial men and women have gathered together in the fall, the season of harvest, to enjoy the bounty which Nature has so lavishly heaped upon this earth. This autumn festival in Ashland holds a promise of being one of the best celebration ever to be presented in the city. There seems to be no holding back on the part of anyone who has been asked* to con tribute or help in making the affair a success. The entire community is working together in order to offer to the public and the visitors to the city during those three days next week the best in entertain ment, fun, frolic, and good old fashioned harvest competition as to prize products. The more products that are entered in the various events the better this Festival will be. If you have anything which fits into any of the various classes, and this ranges from hooked rugs to photographs of Ashland, be sure to bring it to town and enter it in the exhibits. Who knows, you might win a prize. And you’ll certainly be helping in making the Festival one to be remembered.
