And it was this that the residents of Bend had in mind when they started the ball rolling to bring the Dodgers into eamp in the Pilot Butte region. It meant that the city and the people had to stake a lot of time and money on a gamble that having the Dodgers train in Bend would be a paying investment. CluPtcheA Keep Oregon Green State laws and common sense prohibit the throwing ot lighted matches, cigarettes, cigars, or any burning material on the highways o the state. Yet daily, people toss cigarettes casually from the windows ot passing automibiles. The wind created by the passing car often carries these burning fragments into roadside debris where small tires begin, and a small tire in the beginning can rapidly develop into a large lire before the end. Habits are hard to break. N|ost people consider it a safe m atter to toss a lighted cigarette onto a hard surfaced road. This is faulty reason ing. As we have already said, the breeze created by the car can easily carry the burning stub some distance. And it isn’t a safe matter, for the habit, once indulged in, will recur along a wooded trail where under brush that is highly inflamable covers the roadside. This could mean that a lazy method of thinking, an easy way of disposing of cigarettes would be the cause of another disastrous fire, as expensive to the state o FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST Ju n e 30, 1946 Sunday m orning service at 11 o’clock. Much of Ashland’s community revenue comes from the lumber in dustry. A large area of Ashland s residential property borders the for ests to the south. Eire could wipe out the lumber industry in this com munity and Eire could wipe out a large share of the residential and business district. For four years a small community group has been trying to make Ashland conscious of the Forest Eire menace. This group is known as the ’ Keep Oregon Green committee”. Headed by Roland Parks, they include Ray Spaulding, Joe Fader, Mrs. Norman Perrit, Andy Anderson, and Dick Trites. The present committee has been at the wrork of reminding Ashland- ers of the need to take care of Oregon’s forests for the past two years. Before that another group of public spirited citizens worked at the job. Working at this jobs means constantly reminding people of the importance of forests to Oregon; showing people what a huge recreat ional and industrials natural resource this state has in it’s forests; edu cating Oregon children in proper fire safety methods in forested areas. In addition to the safety campaigns the committee sponsors a conser vation program which has as its objective greater conservation of nat ural resources. America, though once a land of plenty, no longer has J unlimited resources. The members of the committee are working to foster better cutting methods, greater utilization of waste, and re- forestration and replanting methods which will assure timber crops sufficient to take care of succeeding generations needs. Under the sponsorship of the committee Grade school children re ceive training in conservation and fire protection methods. Various civic organizations are furnished with material, moving pictures, and speakers, which their entertainment and educational committee chair man welcome. An example of this was the series of pictures and the speaker with the "Keep Oregon Green” committee furnished the Lions at their regular Tuesday meeting this w'eek: We think the committee deserves a lot of thanks and a bouquet of orchids for the work which they are doing in this community. By indi cating that it is the responsibility of each citizen to aid in fire precaut ions, and by taking their own time to teach fellow Oregonians what : precautions should be taken, the committee is doing the community j and the state a service which can’t be measured. « - s .................. . m s S . ’ « I? .» “ ; I Che &dcCon...
