Wash and d ra in the beans. Cut
in to n a rro w strip s. F r y bacon in
heavy s k ille t u n til c ris p and add
green beans and seasonings. Place
lettuce leaves over the top, tu c k ­
ing them in at the sides to keep in
the steam. Cook over a low flame
u n til beans are ju s t b a re ly done.
D isca rd lettuce, add nutm eg and
serve hot.
These beans m ay also be cooked
w ith sm all new potatoes. Sugar and
vinegar m ay be used fo r seasoning
in place o f nutm eg.

1 large head of lettuce, chilled
1 tablespoon m inced onion
3 slices bacon, diced

One of the com m on sights around
m ost households I know are those
w ornout cotton robes w hich you
m ay ju s t now be ta kin g out w ith
y o u r sum m er clothing.
I f the p rin t on the fa b ric hag worn
o r faded to such an e xtent as
to m ake it look even m ore worn
than usual, it would even be w orth
dyeing into u solid color. F ollow
yo u r directions cn the package of
dye to get the best results.
A fte r the robe has been cleaned
o r dyed, and pressed flat, fit the pa­
ja m a pattern to it. You m ay have
to do some s m a rt fittin g to m ake it
come out, but there is bound to be
enough m a te ria l to r the project.
P ajam as m ay be onc-picce or
two-piece, depending upon the p re f­
erence. The one-piece type w ith the
slip-on top w ill save a lo t of w ork
because there need be no b u t­
tonholes. There are no fittin g p rob­
lems in m aking pajam as because the
only re q u ire m e n t is th a t they be
loose and c o m fo rta b le enough fo r
sleeping. I f you are m a kin g pa­
ja m a s fo r a tot, be sure to choose
one w ith a drop seat.

The sewing construction in the pa­
ja m a s is v e ry sim ple. M ost edges
can be finished w ith the p in kin g
shears, and the seams are plain.
In sewing the legs together, the
best type of seam to use is the flat
fe ll because it is stu rd y and lies flat.
To m ake this, stitch firs t on the seam
line fro m the rig h t side. T rim away
one edge to w ith in one-eighth of an
inch o f the stitc h in g . T u rn the other
edge flat o ver this, tu rn in the raw
edge and stitch the seam fro m the
rig h t side.
The in stru ctio n s given here apply
to any type of sleeve, but p a rtic u ­
la rly to the pajam a sleeve, w hich
m ust be fitte d w ell to o ffe r the g re a t­
est com fort. F irs t place the sleeves
in position, m a kin g sure the notches
on the sleeve and the arm hole come
together at e xa ctly the same point.

Routine In Sewing.

you cut, sort out those th a t re q u ire
sew ing and pin the pieces together.
Then you need not go s cra m b lin g
through the lo t of them when you
s ta rt sewing.

allow a generous cut. The leas should
