THE C O U N TR Y NEWSPAPER
The Saturday Evening Post last week paid tribute to an American
institution of which the Southern Oregon Miner and its staff are proud
to be a part. In a series of Norman Rockwell pictures about Jack Blan­
ton, a Missouri newspaperman, the post presented a view of what goes
on behind the scenes of a weekly newspaper.
In an editorial which ran concurrently with the pictures the Post
stated that the country weekly newspaper was about the best symbol
of democracy that we Americans have.
It is the responsibility of this newspaper to be a part of that symbol.
The editors of the Post further stated that "only in the columns of
the country newspaper do the ordinary events and the ordinary indivi­
dual attain the stature of news.”

Following the idea set forth in the previous paragraph, we’d like to
say that this newspaper firmly believes that it can better mirror what
the citizens of Ashland are saying and thinking if it throws it s edi­
torial columns open to all comers. We know that there are several
groups in Ashland that have axes to grind. W e’d be glad to act as the
grindstone, sharpening the axe for the benefit of any good cause.
If any one individual or group of individuals feels as though he or
they has something to say that will benefit the community, let us know,
drop us a line, give us a ring, or better still, come in and get it o ff your
chest. Personally we might disagree with your project thoroughly, but
we’d be glad to give it a public airing.
In the past week we’ve been approached by several people, all of
whom requested that we do something about several things in­
cluding the need for a good nine hole golf course here; the sad state
of the street signs; the value of parking meters; the futility of parking
meters; the need for stop and go signals; the present status of the
U-Turn in the business district; why fishing streams should only be
stocked with rainbow trout; why fishing streams should be stocked
with only eastern brook trout; why the OPA is essential, and why the
OPA should be disbanded.
After doing a bit of checking here and there we discovered that
various departments and various people in the city were already work­
ing on certain of the projects that had been presented to us as being
worthy and in need of a bit of crusading.
We’re going to go right along with those people. We plan to help
this community in any way we can. If your pet project needs some
crusading and you’d like to have some space, write us a letter, sign
your name, we’ll be glad to publish it.
This paper is your paper. Your published comments will help make
