The circ u s is back in N ew York,
and thousands of big city kids w ill
be thrilled no end. But w e pity the
kid who n ev er knew the circu s in a
sm a ll town. B ack h om e in our b o y
hood it w as the ev en t of the y ea r.
The first flush of p osters on the b ill
boards kindled our im agin ation . . . .
w e w ere sle e p le ss for nights before
the great d ay . . . and w e w ere up
at 3:30 a.m . the m orn in g the big
show arrived. . . . It w as alw ays
unloaded in the freigh t ya rd s down
at Long W harf off W ater street, and
w hat a thrill it w as to h ear the
lo co m o tiv e w h istles and then see
the circu s train s pull in, unload
and start on the five-m ile trek to
the circu s grounds, w hich used to
be in E lm C ity park «b ack of the
H ubinger m an sion .
A fter the unloading had pro
g ressed an hour or so. w e hustled
to the grounds to s e e the ten ts go
up. . . . T he rat-tat-tat of the stake-
d rivin g crew s . . . the ru m b le of
the w agon w h eels .

tam b ark and hay . . . the arom a
o f lam b chops and boiled p otatoes
from the cook-tent . . . oh. boy!
