princess w ith the cruel fa th e r. She
could be any o f the p re tty Indian
g irls who. when Indians had o il
money, were sought a fte r by s o ro ri­
ties at the U n iv e rs ity of Kansas.
Then there are tw o old e r n rtists
—women in th e ir fo rtie s, who. ex­
cept th a t they look like sisters-in-lnw
of M adam e C hiang Kai-shek, could
be any of the Russian a rtis ts wno
have entertained us in the other
towns. T h e ir evening dresses are
ju s t as good, they have as m any
gold teeth, but in addition they w ear
b e a u tifu l O rie n ta l je w e lry set w ith
precious stones—old Kazak w o rk ­

M ost of a ll. we like d them as peo­
ple. They were gentle and frie n d ­
ly , and obviously had never been
warned against foreigners. A lm ost
the same th in g could be said o f the
Russians. T h a t in v isib le b a rrie r of
tension and suspicion w hich sepa­
rates Russians fro m a ll foreigners
had been slow ly disso lvin g since we
le ft Moscow. Here in Kazakstan, it
disappeared e n tire ly.
We have now le ft K azakstan and
e n te r the n e ighboring S ocialist So­
v ie t R epublic of U zbekistan, whose
c a p ita l is the ancient.M oham m edan
c ity o f Tashkent. I am rid in g in
