Helping Hand Club News
The H, H. Club enjoyed a skat
ing party February 28th. The
munager of the Skuting Rmk
made the passes available for the
members of the Club.
Twenty-four girls attended the
party AU of them reported hav
ing a fine time in spite of the
tumbles and falls some of them
took.
Miss Madge Mitchell, the Coun
selor of the Helping Hand Club,
chaperoned the girls.
Recently two new girls have
been taken into membership in
the H. H. Club. They are Flor
ence Curry and Charlotte Smyth.
Last week Mr. Bushnell took a
picture of the H. H. Club ,and
most of the girls are planning on
buying a picture of the group.
This organization is the only one
of its kind in Oregon. Washing
ton School is proud of the splen
did work the girls are doing.
Room 8
In room 8 the children are fin
ishing with their February book
lets. Most of them are ready for
binding. We are also coming a-
long nicely with our decimals.
Room 7
The fifth graders of room sev
en are doing fractions and they
are doing fairly well with them.
The Sixth graders are also doing
fractions. They are getting along
fine.
We have all been waiting for
spring and now are writing
poems about spring.
Room 7 has a work shop where
the boys and girls may makei
things when they are finished
with all the other work. Some of
the pupils have made very nice
plaques.
Room 5
Our fourth grade recently lost
three of its members. Betty Toz-
ier has moved away. Larry Wray
went to California and Jimmy
Watrus returned to his former
home in San Diego, California.
We will miss these people very
much.
Because of the absence of our
regular teachers, Mrs. Schuster,
last Friday, our class president,
David Herburger, called a special
class meeting, Monday morning.
The minutes of our Fridays elec
tion were read and new business
was brought before the class. We
elected Helen Pirtle, vice-presi
dent, to fill the vacancy left by
Jimmy Watrus. We also elected
David Herburger to be Boys
Basement Monitor ,and Donald
Williams to be Door Monitor. We
also decided to begin a Good
Citizenship Club in our room.
Each day the names will be plac
ed on the board of the boys and
girls in our room that abide by
all of the rules of the school, for
that day .Fifteen boys’ and girls
in our room earned a place on
the Good Citizenship Roll, the
first day.
Monday afternoon, we began
working on the Dutch Village
Project for our sand table. We
will also make Windmills, Tulips
and wooden shoes, with which to
decorate our window .

GEORGE: “ Yes, 1 certainly would like to
hear why you call th at an old i. ,u.n d
idea. Judge.”
OLD JUDGE: "Glad to tell you. G n e.
Until recently, a person known as an al
coholic was generally treated as a social
outcast. Little if anything was done to
understand him or help him. But, during the
past few years, medical research and study
itas developed that alcoholics are really sick
people . . . that there is usually a deep-
rooted physical, social or emotional reason
behind their behavior. That’s why today so
much is being done to help them by finding
out and correcting the condition that leads
them to excess.”
GEORGE: “ How many folks are there Hie
that, Judge?”
OLD JUDGE: “ Well, according to scientific
research, 95% of the people who d.irk,
drink sensibly. 5% do so unwisely, at tim es.
Included in that 5% is the small perce.ita.e
of the sick people I’m talking a b o rt.”
GEORGE: "T h a t certainly gives m»* e
clearer picture. It’s the most sensible ap
proach I’ve ever heard on the subject."
