Immense Cost of Fire»
Losses from Are, "the scarlet ter
ror.” cost Americans during the first
six months of 1945 more than eight
times as much as they spent all last
year on the legislative branch of
their government, which includes
congress, the botanical gardens, the
library of congress and the govern
ment printing office.
Kills Slowly
In demonstrations of spraying
DDT in dairy barns, entomologists
have found that the insecticide re
mained effective for six weeks to
three months but killed the flies
slowly. Flies receive a lethal dose
in crawling across sprayed areas.
Quiet Wanted
Minneapolis city council Is to con
sider requiring trucks and motor
cycles to equip with “muffler» that
muffle.” It is estimated that city
hall business is held up and delayed
a total of one to two hours every
day because of noisy motors.
Eagar Cane
When a sugar plantation is on fire
that need not mean a total crop loss.
O n l i n e sugarcane plantations the
crop is burned before it is harvested.
This removes heavy useless leaves
but docs not harm the juice-filled
stalks.
Big Eyes
The whale has the largest eye
among animals, with an eye in $ome
species as big as a grapefruit. On
land the largest eye is found in the
ostrich. Largest eye in any land
mammal is that of a horse.
Hog Sanitation Pay»
Studies have shown that a pig
weighs 23 pounds more at four
months cf age when raised under the
sanitation system than a pig raised
in an old hog lot.
Optic Messages
Messages from the eye to the
brain travel over the optic nerve at
the rate of about 200 feet per second.
The visual center is located at the
back of the brain.
Oldest Experimental Plots
The Morrow plots on the campus
of the University of Illinois are
America's oldest soil experiment
field. They were established in
1876.
Shortening Recipe
Seven-eighths of a cup of lard,
oils, or home-rendered fats provides
the same shortening power as one
cup of butter or margarine.
Digestive Process

moved through the stomach and in
testines by wavelike contractions of
these organs.
Heart Disease
