The tourist, the sportsm an and
the vacationist have all enjoyed the
state in b rie f m om ents, but to a

home. T h e y liv e in every section of
the state fro m the northern plateau
(4,000 to 7,000 feet above sea lev el)
to the southern p a rt next to the bor­
d er of M exico (500 to 2,500 feet a lti­
tu de). On the broad plains and the
m ountain sides they graze th eir
livestock, and through the valleys
they lead the irrig a tio n w aters. They
grow long staple cotton, wheat,
corn, b arley, oats, potatoes and im ­
mense q uantities of sub-tropical
fruits. T h e ir dates th rive, and th eir
citrug industry is steadily growing.
F ro m th eir m ines they get copper,
gold, silver, lead, asbestos, zinc and
other m etals.
A rizona Is "A Land M a d e fo r L iv ­
in g ,” the citizens say. Phoenix, the
c a p ita l city, is an exam ple. In 1868
a tiny settlem ent sprang up as a
stagecoach stop. Tw o years later
the townsite was fo rm a lly laid out,
and in 1801 the new co m m un ity was
incorporated. In 1893, Phoenix—the
te rrito ria l seat of g overnm ent —
boasted a population of 3,000. Today
Phoenix is the Southwest's largest
inland city, and has a m e tro p o li­
tan population of 153.000 Its grace-

that region home. And O ra ib i, in
the In d ian country, is said to be the
oldest continuously inhabited .v il­
lage in the U n ited States!
F irs t, there w ere c liff dw ellers,
the hom e-owners of the distant
past. Then the Indians, m any tribes
and m any kinds. Ruins of ancient
cities tell of homes. In 1540 Coro­
nado cam e searching for the Seven
C ities of Cibola. Then cam e the
Spaniards w ith th e ir priests, th eir
herds, and th eir desire to build m is­
sions and homes. And la te r other
w hite men. lured by gold and ad­
venture, cam e too. K it Carson cam e,
and bandits too. The covered wagon
and the stagecoach ra ttle d over
dusty trails.

minutes. Beat egg and add to first
mixture. Add sifted dry ingredients
and fru it. F ill greased muffin pans
two-thlrds full and bake In moderate­
ly hot oven (400°F.) about 20 min­
utes. Makes 15 light, luscious muffins.
