Metal Importa
Imports of lead In 1944 from tho
other Americas totalled 25 3 million
dollars against 13 million dollars in
1938; Imports of tin, mainly from
Bolivia, were up to 24 million dol
lars from 500 thousand dollars in
1938; zinc imports were 13.7 million
dollars against 400 thousand dollars
in 1938. while tungsten imports from
the other Americas jumped to 19.1
million dollars in 1944 from oply 100
thousand dollars in 1938.
Traffic Fatalities
In the 15-year period beginning
with 1927, traffic fatalities hit an all-
time high in 1941 with 39,969 deaths.
With the reduced traffic of war
years, 1942 saw a drop in this tragic
toll to 28.200 and a still further re
duction in 1943 to 23,820. In 1944,
condition of cars and tires began to
tell and the highway death list rose
to 24,300
Hard of Hearing
Conservative e s t i m a t e s show
more than 10 millions with some dif
ficulty in hearing in one or both
ears; 5 millions have disabling han
dicaps, often accompanied by a psy
chological frustration, and more
than 1 million school children ur
gently need special acoustical at
tention.
Fire Losses
About 1,000 homes in the U. S. are
attacked by fire every day and a
farm fire occurs every 15 min
utes. The death toll in the past 10
years is about 35,000 and thousands
more are critically burned and seri
ously maimed. The dollar loss for
the same period is about one billion.
Strawberry Soil
Best soil for strawberries is a
sandy loam which retains moisture.
Soils which are very heavy or ex
tremely light should be avoided.
If irrigation can be provided, the
production period will be lengthened
and yields increased substantially.
U. S. An Associate
The United States was not one
of the Allies in the First World war.
Since there was no common agree
ment on the objects to be attained
by the war, the United States was
an “associate” rather than an
"ally.”
Children's Shoos
Buying shoes for your child is
a responsibility. See that the shoes,
are properly fitted; they should be'
an inch longer than the child’s foot,
heels and counters should fit snug
ly, and the arches should give sup
port.
Children's Hours
Extension Service specialists have
determined that early to bed should
really be the children's motto, for
it has been proved that the best
hours of rest for a^phild are the first
hours of the night.
Discourages Vermin
Painting the interiors of poultry
houses and sheds and barns housing
livestock is a sanitary measure in
that it helps to discourage vermin
and insects. White or light tints are
best for this purpose.
Destroys Vitamins
Heat speeds the destruction of vi
tamins, according to home econo
mists who advise cooking at low
temperatures and for as short a
time as possible.
Sugar Supplement
Dried fruits such as prunes and
raisins have a natural sweetness
that will help extend the sugar con
tent of your meals—and they’re
good for the family diet.
Aids Elimination
A varied diet including plenty of
colored vegetables and fruit, suffi
cient water and regular toilet habits
should result in satisfactory elimina-
Safety Measures
Firescreens should fit snugly at
top as well as sides. See that your
chimneys are clean and in good re
pair.
