About 0:30 Sunday evening the
fire departm ent was culled to 295
G runt street to fight a fire in the
home of Mrs. Ruth McCollister.
When the fire departm ent truck
reached the scene of the fire, the
entire front of the house was a-
flaine.
Little could be done to
suve the house and practically all
of the contents were destroyed.
Loss of the house wus set ut $5,000
with a small am ount of insurance.
Mrs. Emma Adams, aged m oth­
er of Mrs. McCollister, was alone
in the house nt the time the fire
started. She went to the G unter
home nearby to give the alarm,
but there was no phone. She then
went on to the home of her son,
J. Q. Adums some distance awuy
to give the alurm.

term in the arm y which began in
S e p te m b e r 1940. Sgt. King was a
m em ber of the local National
Guard battalion, and was in train ­
ing when the battalion was feder­
alized at the Ooginning of hostili­
ties. His group wu<s Battery A 45th
Coast Artillery. The biggest part
of his time in the arm y was spent
on the coast defenses along the
Pacific, but for the past 2 years
he has been in the Pacific.
His record of service includes
that of service in the southern
Philippines, W estern Pacific, Am­
erican Theatre F 1 vice Medal,
American Defense Service Meda>,
Philippine Liberation S e r v ic e
Medal with bronze star, a Good
Conduct Medal with Clasp and
the Victory Medal and the Purple
Heart. Sgt King arrived in Ash­
land Wednesday after visiting
several days with friends en­

patriotism to be eligible for this
year’s state D.A.R. award is
Shirley Wilcox, senior at A.H.S.
The voting for the candidate to
represent Ashland was done by
the students of the senior class
and the final choice was made by
the teachers. Shirley was chosen
out of the three girls considered
from the class to be named the
‘‘good citizen” of the school.
She will be given a question­
naire which is to be filled out by
her with no assistance and then
mailed to a D.A.R. committee in
Portland. By way of a drawing
this comm ittee will choose the
girl who will be the state’s Good
Citizenship Pilgrim and also two
other girls will be named first
and second alternate. For the past
four years the trip to the nation’s
capital has not been taken by the
w inner but instead a $100 war
bond was awarded to the lucky
girl as it is to be done this year.
A Certificate of Award and a pin
is aw arded to every good citizen
candidate. This presentation will
take place sometime next year.
Shirley is very well known in
Ashland as she has attended the
public schools here ever since the
first grade. Very active in many
school .organizations, she is in
band, chorus, Grizzly Grenades,
is president of Quill and Scroll,
editor of Rogue News, second
vice of the Girls League and Song
Queen. She has majored in music
and Journalism throughout her
school years.
