The Congressional investigation of the Pearl H arbor disaster should be
neither a w itch hunt nor a white wash. I t should seek simply to gather
the tru th , the whole tru th , and nothing but the tru th about that his
toric fiasco and then let the facts speak fo r theftiselves.
I t has become quite apparent that the whole story has not been told
through previous investigations. I t is also evident that m ilitary officials
are not anxious to have some o f the facts publicized, since they revea
instances o f startling incompetence and negligence on the part o f many
o f those who were responsible fo r the defense o f Pearl Harbor.
It w ill be much better, however, fo r all o f us, including both politi
cal and m ilita ry officials, i f there is a complete airing o f ail the facts, no
m atter how embarrassing. Unless this is done false reports and accusa
tions w ill be repeated indefinitely.

came in the last few months before the end o f the
war and has continued unabated ever since.
It also tells you why...even though we are making
swift progress in bringing service back to normal
...your Long Distance call may sometimes be de

You can be certain we are doing everything pos

There are reasons. One is the private war waged in Congressional com
mittee hearings between the "to p brass” o f the A rm y and N avy on the
question o f a unified command.
For weeks the generals have carried the battle in favor o f unification.
From all ¡indications they have established a pretty solid beachhead. The
admirals, caught somewhat o ff balance, have seen some o f their thickest

armour o f conservatism pierced by A rm y big guns.
We laymen do not understand the in and outs o f m ilita ry politics or
the frictions and pealousies between the tw o services. But we are pretty
well convinced that separate commands are costly— in money and in
lives. M illions o f our dollars were wasted when the A rm y and N avy
bid against each other fo r supplies in the open market during the war.
As to lives, need we m ention P ^ r l H a rb o r as one example?
