During the last two months of
the Okinawa campaign, the EN­
TERPRISE was hit hour times
while protecting land troops from
Jap air attacks. Twice she retired
from Task Force 58, for repairs
at a nearby base. Then, on May
14, this flagship of Vice Admiral
Marc A. Mitcher, was hit by a
Jap suicide plane, Fourteen mem­
bers of the crew were killed and
34 wounded. In a record time of
17 minutes the valiant crew had
the flames under control and 13
minutes later, the fires were com­
pletely out.
