With the season for late sum- |
mer flareups of sleep.ng sickness
now here, heulth authorities to
day reported thut chicken mites
have just been added to the list
of carriers of this killing disease
of horses.
The virus of sleeping sickness
was isolated from chicken mites
on a farm where horses had com
down with sleeping sickness, the
American Foundation for Animal
Health reported.
"It is believed that the mites
pick up the virus from'chickens,
and in turn transmit the c^sease
to people as well as to horses,”

the report said. “Veterinarians
had previously found that the
virus could be harbored from
year to year by birds and poultry,
and then passed on by morqui-
toes, ticks, and the assassin bug.
Mites are now added to this list
of ‘vectors’.
“In view of the late summer
and early fall flareups of sleep
ing sickness in the past several
years, farmers should take every
step possible to protect their ani
mals now against such outbreaks.
Vaccination is recommended in
those areas where the disease has
appeared before. Efforts should
be made to eliminate biting in
sects from stables, to keep horses
and mules out of lowland past
ures, and to protect them with
nets while at work."

Reversing a ruling of nearly
three years standing, the Navy is
now accepting voluntary enlist
ments in the age groups formerly
only eligible for military service
through selective service. Not
since December 5, 1942 has it
been possible for a man between
18 and 38 to voluntarily enlist in
the armed forces. This was the
announcement of a new policy of
the Navy Department made by
Chief Stewart, Recr u i t e r-i n-
charge of the Navy Recruiting
Station in Medford.
Under the new plan it will now
be possible for men between the
ages of 17 to 50*6 inclusive to
enlist in the Navy for peacetime
service. Those in the 17 to 30
bracket inclusive, may be enlist
ed in the Regular Navy while the
older age group will be eligible
for Naval Reserve service.
"Since the announcement of
the capitulation of the Japs we
have had numerous inquiries
from men desiring to enlist in
the Navy,” Chief Stewart said.
“Now we are prepared to answer
all questions regarding service in
the peacetime Navy and to com
plete enlistments without further
reference to the man’s draft
board. With such enlistments will
go all the advantages that accrue
to those desiring to make the
Naval Service a career. The Navy
Rrecruiting Station in the P O
Building in Medford, Oregon is
open daily to answer question of
those interested.
With all the gas you want and the
urge to hit the open road stronger
than ever, only one question remains
