week end in Talent visiting re ­
latives.

Mr. and Mrs. Simeon G riffith
have sold their appart ni e n t
house on the old Pacific highway
to Mr. and Mrs. Jam es Purdue.
Mr. G riffith has purchased a
ranch near Hornbrook, California
and plan on m aking th at their
fu tu re home. The G riffiths have
been residents of the Talent dis­
trict for several years and will be
missed by their friends and neigh
bors.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvan Coats of
Phoenix were calling in Talent
Sunday morning.
Miss May Dry returned to her
home Friday after undergoing an
appendicitis operation in the com
m um ty hospital in Ashland.

F. Parks, Saturday.

broadcast of a series of 12 tra n ­
scriptions, featuring the music of
a group of negro singers and a
short safety message by Paul
Jones, director of publicity for
the National Safety Council.
These broadcasts are aired S u n ­
days at 9:55 p.m.

Two new regularly scheduled
saltey broadcasts are being aired
over Oregon radio stations, ac­
cording to Robert S. Farrell, se­
cretary of state. The safety divi­
sion of his office is cooperating
in one of the broadcasts while the
other, a national program , is spoil
sored by Portland bafety agen­
cies.
A weekly program on farm and
ru ral safety goes on the air each
Tuesday during the farm hour
beginning at 12:15, over station

Oregon has recently been assign­
ed to the 397th Infantry of the
100th Infantry Division and is
now serving w ith that organiza­
tion on the Seventh Arm y front
in southern Germany.
With his new assignm ent he
has become a m em ber of the
famous “C entury” Division, com­
m anded by Major G eneral W ith­
ers A. Burress of Richmond, Va.
The 100th entered com bat in
November and cracked the pro­
posed G erm an w inter defensive
line in the Vosges M ountains
after only two weeks front line
experience. It th e n followed
through to open up the key Saales
Pass leading to the A lsatian Plain
and Strasbourg.
Later, at the strongest point in
the entire Maginot Line, the area
around the town of Bitche, the
C entury Division pounded G er­
m an troops in famous Fort Schies-
seck for a full week and finally
captured the Hbavy fortifications
only to be forced to give them up
again w hen the G erm an counter­
attack ir> Belgium caused a re ­
grouping of Allied forces.
Three m onths later, after the
100th had earned a special com­
m endation from the S ixth Army
Group Commander, Lt. Gen.
Jacob L. Devers, for w ithstand­
ing the m ajor b ru n t of the Nazi

Budget Hearing
Set for June 8*h
A public hearing on the Jack-
son county budget for the 1945-
1946 tax year, starting July, will
be held Friday, June 8, starting
at 10 a.m. in the court house audi­
torium. This date was fixed fol­
lowing the formal certification
and signing of the budget at a
budget com m ittee m eeting last
Friday
The budget provides for the
raising of $366,841.05 by tax levy.
This is $16,718.77 less than for
the current tax year , totaling
$383,560.28.
Due to w ar conditions road
building is lim ited in the 1945-46
budget. County officer salaries
are increased, w here ordered by
legislative action at the last ses
sion. Pay in the county health
departm ent is increased modestly
also in the district attorney’s of­
fice and juvenile departm ent.
County offices and departm ents
are given operating funds the
same as this tax year.
The budget was completed in
a week, som ething of a record
for this county. The budget com­
m ittee was composed of the coun­
ty court m em bers and Ben H ard­
er, Medford, W. W. Robison, Ash­
land, and A rnold Bohnert, Cen­
tral Point.
A shland H igh,track team plac­
ed fourth in the state track and
field m eet held in Corvallis Sat­
urday, w ith Jefferson high of
Portland first, G rants of Portland
second and K lam ath Falls third.
Forty-four schools, including
233 athletes, took p a rt in the
meet, w ith 33 schools scoring
points.
Gandee placed second in the
100 yard and 220 yard dashes, be­
ing defeated by only inches in
the 100 yard dash and by a stride
in the 220 event. Edmundson, of
Corvallis, was the w inner in both
of these events.
Fullerton placed secohd in the
mile, b u t was unable to run the
half-m ile because of a badly
sprained leg. He recorded the
fastest tim e in the state in the
half mile a t the district m eet in
Medford.
Tison placed fifth in the quali­
fying round Friday, but failed to
place Saturday. M erriman, who
was expected to score a second in
the 440 yard event, suffered ill
effects from the trip north and
failed to qualify.

church spoke in assembly Friday.
Mr. Rogers spoke to the 9th
grade classes Tuesday morning
on w hat subjects could be taken
in their Sophomore Year in high
school.
The paper drive was a real
success w ith Junior High again
the champions. We were closely
followed by the W ashington and
Lincoln schools.
O ur band plays T hursday in
the contest in Medford, leaving
at noon and staying for the con­
cert in the evening. Both G rants
Pass and M edford are entering
only high school bands.

rounding fortifications. This time
the famous fortress city fell be­
fore the smashing attack —the
first time the citadel had ever
oven taken in its 200 yeur history
Following the cupture of Uit-
che, the 100th went through the
Siegfried Line, and m ade a two-
day 100-mile dash across the P al­
atine area to the Rhine River and
Budwigshaven. Crossing the fam ­
ous G erm an river, the 100th a-
gain took up the chase and, after
the most bitter, fanatical fight
the Germans have made on their
home soil, captured the key rail
and comm unication center of 100-
000 population at Heilbronn. It is
now helping to drive the G er­
mans back through the Bavaria
in southern Germany.
