vecchlo. local priest. He promised the
priest to attend mass the following morn-
lag. When tim e tor mass arrived, the
M ajo r was hasy la h i t o n e « aad over­
looked the appoiatmeat. until church hell
awoke him to the (act that he was late.
He arrived before mass was over, much
to the relict of the priest.

CHAPTER V
A t this an g ry m om ent, G argano,
C h ie f of the C a ra b in ie ri, cam e up
to the line. This m an was called
by the people T h e M an W ith Tw o
Hands, because of his continuous
and d ra m a tic gesturing.
H e was.
he seemed to think, an actor, and
he could not say tw o words w ithout
gesturing w ith both hands. H e pos­
sessed and exercised a ll the essen­
tia lly Ita lia n gesture«: the tw o fore­
fingers laid side by side, the circ le
of thum b and forefinger, the hands
up in stop position, the salute to the
forehead w ith p alm fo rw a rd , the
fingertips of the two hands placed
tip to tip, fee fingers linked, the
hands flat and d ow n w ard as if p at­
tin g sand, the hands up heel to heel
and pulled to w ard the chest, the
a ttitu d e of p ra y e r, the pointing fo re ­
finger of accusation, the V as if for
v ic to ry o r sm oking cig arettes , the
fo refin ger on the chin, the ro llin g of
the hands. A ll, he used th em all.

C a rm e lin a shouted: “ To push his
w ay to the head of the line in front
of Z ap u lla's b read shop.”
G arg a n o said: “ It is a p rivile g e
the officials of the town have a l­
w ays en jo y ed .”
M a jo r Joppolo said: " Is that so?”
G arg a n o said:
“ I charge this
w om an w ith disturbing the peace
and questioning a u th o rity ." G arg ano
was shrew d in saying this, for he
saw that things w ere going against
h im , and now he had put the m a tte r
on an official ra th e r than a perscfiial
basis.
T h e M a jo r would have to
decide the case officially-
T h e M a jo r decided w ith a speed
which dazzled G argano. H e d ecid­
ed th at the w om an was rig h t but
that he could not say so, because if
he did the C h ief would n ever regain
his au th o rity , and the M a jo r w anted
to keep him in office. T h e refo re he
said: “ I sentence this w om an to one
day in ja il, suspended sentence. L e t
h er go, G arg ano , and g ath er a ll
the officials of Adano for m e at
once.”
When C a rm e lin a got outside, she
ra n s tra ig h t back to the bread shop.
The bread was not read y yet, and
the people gave her back her place
at the head of the lin e and shouted
to her: "W h a t happened. C a rm e li­
na? W hat did they do to you?”
C a rm e lin a told w hat had happened
and she said: " D id you ev er h ear of
such a lig h t sentence in Adano? I
believe in m y h e a rt th a t the M is te r
M a jo r thought I was rig ht. And w hat

C a rm e lin a , who was annoyed by
h avin g had wood-coke throw n a t her,
said tru cu len tly: " M is te r G arg ano ,
you w ere C h ie f of the C a ra b in ie ri
under the old re g im e , and th a t en­

the line. I am not sure th a t you
a re still C h ief of the C a ra b in ie ri.”

G arg a n o said: ‘ ‘W om an, stop your
shouting, or I w ill a rre s t yo u ," and
he gripped his own le ft w rist w ith
his own rig h t hand, signifying a r ­
rest.
C a rm e lin a said: ‘ W here is your
a u th o rity ? ”
M a rg h e rita the fo rm id a b le w ife of
C ra x i said: “ I believe th at this m an
is s till Chief, since the M is te r M a ­
jo r is keeping m any F ascist scoun­
drels in office u ntil they prove th e m ­
selves bad. B ut I do not believe
th at under A m e ric a n la w he has the
rig h t to go to the head of the line.
T h a t is w here I think you a re rig ht,
C a rm e lin a .”
G arg a n o stepped out of the line.
"W ho questions m y rig h t? ”

C a rm e lin a , w ife of the lazy F a tta ,
standing rig h t beside h im , startled
h im by w hispering in his e a r: " I
question it, T w o -H a n d s.”
U p to this tim e Z ap u lla the b aker,
standing in the fro n t of his shop,
had been torn between the two au­
th o ritie s , the old and the new. But
he was so annoyed w ith C a rm e lin a
fo r h avin g prodded h im th a t he now
said: ‘ ‘A rre s t her. M is te r C hief, if
you h ave any co u rag e.”
U p to this tim e G arg a n o the C hief,
so m ew hat unsure of his ground, had
been try in g to think of a w ay of re ­
tirin g g ra c e fu lly . B u t now his m a n ­
hood, as w ell as his au th ority, was
challenged. H e m oved tow ard C a r­
m e lin a and said: “ W om an, you are
u nd er a r re s t.”
C a rm e lin a shouted: ‘ ‘K eep your
tw o a c tiv e hands off m e, G a rg a n o .”
Z a p u lla said: “ W ill you let this
w om an shriek down yo u r courage?”
G arg a n o clapped his hands on
C a rm e lin a . She scream ed. A ll up
and down the lin e w om en shouted:
"O u t w ith the F ascist C h ief of C a ra ­
b in ie ri. O ut w ith Tw o-Hands. Out
w ith m en who push them selves to
the head of a line ahead of women
who h ave been w aitin g three hours.”
G a rg a n o dragged C a rm e lin a off
sc re am in g and kicking , and the an ti-
G arg a n o , an ti-F a sc is t scream s in the
lin e g rew louder and louder. Even
M e rc u rio Salvato re, although as c r i­
e r he was m o re or less an official
and should have re m a in ed n eu tral
o r even taken the side of G argano,
ra is e d his huge voice in a careful
shout: “ Dow n w ith in ju s tic e !”
W hen G a rg a n o pulled C a rm e lin a
in to M a jo r Joppolo’ s office, she was
s till sc re am in g . B u t the M a jo r
ju m p e d to his feet and said sh arply:
“ Silence, sh re w ,” and she fe ll quiet
a t once.
“ W h a t is this a ll about?” the M a ­
j o r asked.
G a rg a n o said: “ T his w om an ques­
tioned m y a u th o rity ,” and he p oin t­
ed a t h e r w ith both forefingers.
C a rm e lin a said: “ T h e re is m o re
to It than th a t.”
As they passed each c a rt, Gen
e ra l M a rv in w aved his rid in g crop
in such a w ay as to in d icate th at
the c a rt should m ove over. Since
there was nothing to m ove o ver into
except the ditch, w hich a t In te rva ls
along the road expanded into tank
traps, the carts never did m ove
over.
T he G e n e ra l grew an g rie r
and an g rier.
T h e d riv e r, a nice boy fro m M a s ­
sachusetts. put the heel of his hand
on the horn button ag ain st his own
w ish.
H e w as in no h u rry , and
knew th at no m a tte r how fast they
w ent, he would only h ave to w ait
when they got w h e re v e r they w ere
going.
T his sense was going to be the
undoing of his m u le ju s t now, be­
cause G e n e ra l M a rv in 's face was
beginning to grow d a rk , and some
veins w hich h ave n e v e r been de­
scribed in the supplem ents began to

tures, G a rg a n o -d e s c rib e d to them
the h u m ilia tio n he had suffered, un­
til M a jo r Joppolo said: “ Silence,
please.”
T h e officials d rew up in a circ le
around the M a jo r's desk. T h e M a ­
jo r stood up.
“ I w an t you to be m y frien d s,”
he said.
“ As m y friends. I w ill
consider it m y duty to te ll you ev­
eryth in g I th in k, fo r w e do not w ant
Adano to be a town o f m ysteries and
a place o f suspicion.
“ Adano has been a F ascist town.
T h a t is n a tu ra l, because the country
was F ascist, th ere fo re the town was
also. B ut now th at the A m erican s
have com e, we a re going to run the
town as a dem ocracy.
“ Perhaps you do not know w hat
a dem o cracy is. I w ilf tell you.
“ D e m o cracy is this: dem o cracy
is th at the men of the governm ent
a re no longer the m asters of the
people. T h e y a re the servants of
the people. W hat m akes a m an m as­
te r of another m an? I t is th at he
pays him for his w ork. Who pays
the m en in the governm ent? The
people do, fo r they pay the taxes
out of w hich you a re paid.
“ T h e re fo re you a re now the serv­
ants of the people of Adano. I too
am th e ir servant.
W hen I go to
buy b read, I shall take m y place
at the end of the line, and I w ill w ait
m y tu rn .

On the ninth m orning, G en eral
M a rv in was d riv in g along the road
to w ard V ic in a m a re and cam e to the
town of Adano. F ro m tim e to tim e
along the road his d r iv e r had had to
alow down behind the little Ita lia n
E rr a n te slept b eau tifu lly. H e was
com ing to the g ra y p a rt of the fish
ju s t under the ribs.
