Univ or This ’n That Or*ton by Th« Old Timer Saturday, Murch 17 in St. Pat rick'« Day. 1 St. Patrick, put ton suint of Ire land, was born about the year 387. There is considerable doubt as to the place of his nutivity. The best authority is Hrittuny, France. When Hi years of age some Irish Celts raided his nutive town and he wus curried away as u slave to Irelond, where he served as shep herd for years. Later he returned to relatives and home. * * * He entered the priesthood. Lat er he was consecrated bishop and received his mission to Ireland from Pope Celestine in the year 431. St. Patrick founded many churches and religious houses. Ik- died at the age of 120 years. Pop** ^kat J ta i gometkùu} p 2.()0 p e r y e a r Three Ash landers Are Liberated in The Philippines Good News Com«* to Local Relative* in First Word From Loved One* Among the names listed the pust week by the War Depart ment of those liberated in the Philipines were those of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney S. Bartlett and Theo dore L. Ryall. Very little had been heard from the three in the time since the fall of the Philip pines to the enemy and the an nouncement by the War Depart ment was the first official word that had been received for a long time. Mrs. Bartlett is the daughter of Mrs. C. L. Glaze of Ashland. Mrs Glaze had had one short letter from her daughter after the fall of the Philippines, evidently dic tated, in which she said that she was a prisoner, and told of some of the hardships they were under going, and stating that she was doing some of the work in the place where they were held and that he husband was working on the roads. Mr .and Mrs. Bartlett were liv ing in Manila when war started. He was a mining engineer and had lived there for a number of years. Mrs. Bartlett had just re turned to Manila from a visit here when the war started. The third of those listed by the War Department is Theodore L. Ryall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo dore K. Ryall, of Route 2, Ash land. The son was a prisoner of war captured at Bataan and was known to have been confined in the Santo Tomas, barracks. One brief message hade been received from him, but was a long time ago and as none of the home folks letters were answered or acknow ledged, it was thought that he had died. Ashland residents will rejoice with the parents in the release of these former Ashland residents. g a y -A n d 9t! ASHLAND. OREGON, THURSDAY, March 15, 1945 Easter Program Is Planned by Choirs Farmers Discuss Co-Operatives at The UNITED CHOIRS of the churches of Ashland are rehears Tuesday Meeting ing each Thursday night. The members are working with en thusiasm on as fine a program of Easter music as they have ever done. Under the capable leader ship of Miss Nora Lunde the sing ers are polishing difficult sec tions to a finish that will permit a brilliant rendition of the whole. It is a fine tradition that the Ashland Churches are building up in this annual celebration of the joyous Easter season. The high standards in music and per- forinance that have been main tained make this United Choir program an institution of which Ashland citizens may well be proud. It is quite necessary that all be present this Thursday who plan to participate in the final pro gram, since plans must be made as to seating and provision of robes.
