la rly of food in southern Ita ly ,
th at some risks must be taken
re g a rd in g supplies a t the tim e of
the collapse in n orthern Ita ly .
T h a t collapse m a y w ell not
com e u n til G e rm a n y itself col­
lapses, in w hich case the ship­
ping situation w ill be much less
acute.
“ U n d er the circum stances, 1
have d eterm ined to assume the
resp on sib ility fo r asking G en eral
W ilson to Increase the ra tio n to
300 g ram s throughout all of Ita ly
th at our forces o ccupy."
D espite this categoric position by
the P resid en t of the U n ited States
Gen. S ir H e n ry M a itla n d W ilson, re­
ferred to above, did nothing. L ast
week. S ec re tary Stettinius em ph a­
sized shipping as the reason why
increased feeding had not been
given Ita ly . But he did not give the
whole story A ctually, as pointed out
by the President, there has been a c
cu m u lating a stock p ile of food fo r
unliberated northern Ita ly .

the first associate ju stice of the U . S.
Suprem e court, Jam es W ilson, had
to fiee Pennsylvania to escape his
creditors and was about to be
served w ith e x tra d itio n papers in
Edenton, N. C., when he died.
Also, John Rutledge of South C aro ­
lin a, one of the chief d ra fte rs of the
constitution, was th reaten ed w ith
im p riso n m en t for debt and only re ­
m ain ed out of ja il through the suf­
feran ce of his creditors.
