however, we have started build

2. T h e re was and is no disposition
to doubt the wisdom of G e n e ra l M a r
shall's decision.
H o w ever,
these
b atte rin g -ra m tactics cost m en. also ;
tire men o u t The A m eric an system
is to keep divisions on the fro n t line, i
bringing up fresh m en only fo r re
placem ents. Thus the divisions now
at the front have been fighting stead
ily since the landing in N o rm an d y
last June— w ith, of course, a lot of
m en coming up as replacem ents.
3. This is considered an excellen t
system and gets results. H o w ever,
the G erm an s im m e d ia te ly took out
th e ir battle troops a fte r N o rm an d y
and sent them to rest behind the
lines. The N azi boys and old men
w e encountered in the S ieg fried line
m ade us think the G e rm a n a rm y
was shot to pieces, but it w asn’t.
The experienced b attle troops, now
refreshed a fte r a long rest, are ta k
ing the offensive against us.
4. The w a r d e p artm en t itself was
responsible for a lot of the fav o rab le
news which gave the public a gen
e ra l feeling of overconfidence. One
of its most im p o rtan t indications
was th a t some 800,000 G e rm a n
troops w ere kille d or taken prisoners
durin g the clean-up of F ra n c e , m a k
ing a sizable hole in the N a zi a rm y .
O f these, how ever, about 400,000
w e re R u ss ia n -U krain ian la b o r bat
talion s. Thus the A m erican public
had reasons to believe th at a larg e
slice of the G e rm a n a rm y was deci
m ated .

Scrambled Messages
The destruction of telephone
wires by the Nuzis retreating from
France and the Low Countries did
not interfe e with the communica
tions of the pursuing Allies, »ays
Colliers. They were equipped with
a new cable thut, although no
larger than a pencil, carries three
telephone and four telegruph cir
cuits, is laid alongside the road as
fast as the troops advance.
This cable transmits "scram

sound to the enemy like a se
